NEW YORK—Laura Meets Jeffrey: Both Sides Of An Erotic Memoir is available now from New Blue Books in hardcover, paperback and eBook. Co-authored by Jeffrey Michelson and Laura Bradley, Laura Meets Jeffrey is a BDSM erotic cyclone/love story told in explicit detail, with Laura Bradley’s memories providing a counterpoint to Jeffrey's. Together they paint, for the first time, a complete non-fiction picture of the master/slave relationship.
The year was 1980. Jeffrey was a designer for rock stars and creative director of an arty hardcore porn magazine. He spent much of his free time boxing or at orgies. Laura was a lingerie model working at a high-end brothel to pay off her husband's gambling debt. When they met, it was "love at first orgasm."
"I was the horniest man I ever met and Laura was my wet dream come true. She wasn’t just gorgeous, she was also hornier than me," said Jeffrey Michelson in a recent interview. "I was naturally dominant and Laura was experimenting with her submissive side, so it didn’t take much for us to slide deep into S&M."
Laura writes, “I don’t think that I ever asked Jeffrey to spank me the first time. I’m not graphic like that. He just knew. He intuited it. He probably gave a little and then I wanted more. I definitely liked the real thing. It had to be real. It couldn’t just be patting -- a patty-pat. I definitely wanted it hard.
“Whipping elevates sensation,” Laura adds. “It magnified everything -- but that’s an understatement; it brought my whole body to this incredibly intense feeling place ... the whipping made my orgasms bigger and better. It made them beyond what I ever imagined an orgasm could be. It’s like orgasm times orgasm.”
Michelson created the explicit-sex magazine Puritan and designed advertising for The Beatles’ Apple Records for almost four years. He also oversaw production of record jackets for John Lennon, The Rolling Stones and the movie, El Topo.
Woven through the story of Laura Meets Jeffrey are numerous side trips through the pop culture of the era. There’s a comical treatise on the food, clothing, hair-dos and sex practices of the five social classes of orgies in New York from 1971 to 1981; essays on anal sex, spanking, masturbation, and "the cocaine delusion;” Jeffrey’s first person accounts of working for John & Yoko and George Harrison; and his boxing with champion Jose Torres and actor Ryan O’Neal.
Together, Laura and Jeffrey join the camera crew recording Steve and Maureen Van Zandt’s wedding and work with Bruce Springsteen and Little Richard. They get high with Timothy Leary, hang out with Norman Mailer and meet up with writer Jerzy Kosinski at sex clubs. The book also includes excepts from their interviews with Mailer and Timothy Leary. (Mailer always said his interview with Laura and Jeffrey was one of his half dozen best out of 600, and he included it in two of his collections.)
Mailer guided the editing, bequeathed the Foreword and considered this book “literature” rather than mere writing. His foreword proclaims that this book is “above the directly pornographic, most readable, surprisingly objective, funny, salacious…and perversely—dare I say it?–uplifting!”
Legs McNeil, author and former editor of Spin Magazine, writes in the introduction, “Be warned: This is a dirty book, an odd romantic S&M love story bathed in bodily fluids. And be invited: This is one of the best-written nonfiction works I’ve ever read.”
Reviews on Amazon (averaging 4.9 stars out of 5) report the writing brings the reader straight into the action working with celebrities, participating in naked romps at orgies, glory holes and BDSM clubs, and getting up close and personal with porn stars, swingers, sugar daddies and horny White House speechwriters.
"'There was that brief party of sexual liberation, between The Pill and AIDS when living the way Laura and I did wouldn’t necessarily kill you," Jeffrey said. "It was an exciting time, a great ride, and I don’t know if such freedom will ever come around again.”
