LEGALISING UNMARRIED FRENCH COUPLES

Whether you're hetero- or homosexual, an unmarried French couple is about to enjoy the same legal rights as married couples, thanks to a law the French Parliament passed Wednesday.

Originally an idea toward recognizing homosexual unions, Conservative News Service says, the final outcome will give legal standing to any couple sharing a home - including siblings, or even a priest and his housekeeper.

The new law will force "the retreat of homophobia" with "a solution to the five million couples who live together without being married," says French Justice Minister Elizabeth Guigou to the New York Times, which adds the law makes France the first traditionally Catholic nation to recognize homosexual unions.

Opponents, including conservatives and Catholics, call the law anti-family and immoral, CNS says, and they will try to have it declared unconstitutional.
