LA Times Calls Porn LA Economy's "Dirty Secret"

The LA Times leads off its front page today with a story about the porn industry. "While Hollywood is fretting about a downturn in production...a certain niche of the entertainment world is quietly flourishing," the Times writes. While many production jobs are fleeing to cheaper markets, like Canada, according to the Times, stagehands are finding jobs in the porn industry, provided they're willing "to stretch a boom over a couple in bed." According to the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp., Hollywood industry jobs are down 13% but porn is up 25%, with one out of every five shoots being a porn film. The Times article states that porn is on track to produce 10,000 new titles this year, quoting resources from AVN. The Times, however, may be off just a little in its estimate of 1600 porn stars

"You may not approve of the product, but the adult film industry is an amazingly large business," Jack Kyser, chief economist of the Economic Development Corp. is quoted as saying. "The success of the adult segment is a welcome anchor in the wind." Kyser estimates that porn offers somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 jobs to the local economy.

The Times article describes the porn business as one that "transforms apple-cheeked young women...into buxom sex workers." It says that LA mayor Richard Riordan wishes it would go away. Riordan calls porn "a black eye" to the city.

Greg Alves, VP of Metro, cites business convenience factors. Jenna Jameson is described as running around in a $90,000 Mercedes and making $5,000 per sex scene.

Quoting Richard Pacheco from his speech at the recent Night of the Stars, stating that when porn was bad, it was good, the Times article says that porn hasn't seen the ups and downs of mainstream Hollywood. Plus the fact that it is global.

"The audience keeps growing. Adult entertainment now has more acceptability in the mainstream and with the Internet and other new formats," says David Leibowitz, a managing director at Burnham Securities Inc. in New York.

The article goes on to say how porn can be found on the shelves of Tower Records and Fry's Electronics. Forrest Research Inc., an Internet tracking company states that porn is among the fastest growing areas on the Internet. Though the article acknowledges the glut of porn and falling prices, it concedes the industry as a money maker.

"You really have to try hard to lose money in this business," Steve Orenstein of Wicked Pictures is quoted as saying.

In what must have come as heart-breaking bad news to Luke Ford, an unidentified FBI spokesman says, "there is little indication today that pornography is controlled by organized crime."

Vivid gets a particular profile with its technological advances in the DVD business. "Vivid's DVD technology is so advanced it's almost disturbing," writes the Times.

Mike Albo comments: "Gene: According to an FBI spokesperson in today's front-page porn story in the L.A. Times, "there is little indication today that porn is controlled by organized crime…" Gee, and a certain internet loser with no sources (who, incidentally takes exception to the article-probably because he wasn't quoted) keeps telling us the opposite. I'm confused. Should I believe a well-respected newspaper that checks its facts or some guy with a website who doesn't. Please advise."

Gene sez: "My advice is to buy low, sell high."

Is There a Go-Gos' Sex Tape?

David Aaron Clark comments about the possibilities of either a Go-Gos' or a Bangles' sex tape existing, an issue that has been raised on this site: "Funny how urban legends build -- the video your reader is looking for is a crude, black and white backstage and motel-room home video of the Go-Gos on their first tour, before they became really big. One of their roadies gets hammered and they defile his numb body while he's unconscious by sticking things up his ass, putting shaving cream on him, etc. They try to get one of their girlfriends to pick up his dick and put in her mouth, but she never does. We used to run this tape on MIDNIGHT BLUE back when I worked at SCREW. They probably still do ..."

Albo also comments about the possibilities of such a tape "Gene: Re the guy who wrote in asking about a sex video involving an '80s girl group, I believe I may have some insight. There was a tape circulating through L.A.'s so-called "paisley underground" that featured some sex action with a couple of junkie chicks from a band called the Pandoras. The way people hoard and collect things, I'm pretty sure that, with a little digging, a copy could probably be found. Hope that helps."

Bone Denies Assault; Bounced Check Charges

Angela D'Angelo says that John T. Bone bounced a check to Mia Domore for a $200 blowjob scene from last week. She also claims that Bone tried to have his way with Domore some weeks earlier. Bone denies the allegations and is supported by agent DK who says that Domore completely denied that a sexual incident occurred.

D'Angelo: "She [Domore] is fresh in the business. I went into John T. Bone and had a meeting with him about scenes I had. [D'Angelo is now producing product.]

"Bone looked at her [Domore] and gave me some comments what to do. I introduced her. He said to step out, that he need to talk to her. I said fine. I was out in the front of the building. She came out and said he said he wanted her to give him a blowjob for work. I said excuse me? No. Let's go. Let's get out of here, right now. She went back in the office to tell him no. He locked the door right behind her. She said he sat her on his lap and tried to pull down her dress to put his hands on her breasts. Then he tried to shove her head down so she could start giving head. That's when I came knocking on his office door, saying come on we got to go. I didn't know this was going on. I'm knocking on the door trying to get in, saying we got to go. She came out and told me what he did. She was so scared and disappointed."

According to D'Angelo, Domore then was called in to do a scene with Kid Vegas last Thursday. Domore supposedly had spoken to Bone on the phone since and he apologized for the sexual incident. "She said as long as no kinky stuff goes on, she'll go in," D'Angelo said. D'Angelo claims the check bounced.

D'Angelo: "It's a $200 scene. That's what makes it all the more sick. The check was no good. There was no funds. I warned her [Domore] and said if you ever go to work for him this is what's going to happen. At first she thought it was Kid Vegas' thing. She called Bone that day and said I want my money. I called him up and told him this is really screwed for you to be doing this to people in the business. I said I'm sick of you doing this. That's when Bone called her up and told her you need to keep your mouth shut and stop talking your business to everybody. He told Mia that he was going to shove his foot down my mouth all the way to my throat. Then, when she went to pick up her money he called her a bitch when he was handing her the money. That's what irked me even more to have to call her a bitch after he burned her like that.

"This is not fair to anybody in the business, female or male," said D'Angelo who got back into the industry last summer. D'Angelo, who also used the names Suckoya and Holly Davidson during her heyday, had been out of the industry about 7 years before making her return last August.

Bone remembers an entirely different set of circumstances involving D'Angelo and Domore.

Bone: "She [Domore] has never had a check from me. Where would you like to start? With the interview-thing? I heard that thing, too. It was told to me by DK. So, while DK was in my office, I got the girl [Domore] on the speaker phone. I asked her what the story was about. She completely denied it, said it wasn't true. She said she never said anything of the sort. She couldn't understand why anybody would be spreading a story like that. It had to have been Angela D'Angelo who was spreading the story, but it was completely unfounded and completely untrue. DK was there and listened to every word. Predicated on that, we had a shoot last Thursday. David Aaron Clark was shooting for me.

"The day before I gave David a check to cover the shoot. He had two other people booked. They flaked. Kid Vegas said I know this girl who really needs money, she'll work really cheap, let's get her in. Kid Vegas calls the girl [Domore]. The girl comes in, does the scene. David Aaron Clark gives her a check for $200. The next day I get a hysterical phone call from this girl. She's called the Labor Board, she's coming down with the Labor Board, all kinds of threats. I said I'm sorry, but, what's the problem? The check is no good. I gave her David Aaron Clark's home phone number. I said give him a call, see if you can resolve the problem. I know he has the money. I've given it to him.

"She calls me back ten minutes later, hysterical, screaming, carrying on. I said, okay, here's the situation. You'll get your money today. Let me see if I can get a hold of David and resolve the problem. If I can't get hold of David you can come in this afternoon [last Friday] after 2pm. I guarantee you'll get your money in cash whether I get a hold of David or not. Then I had to go out. I got back at 1:30. At 1:30 David was already in my office. He had put the check into his account at Bank of America, but it hadn't cleared his account yet. I said don't worry, I'll give you the cash, we'll pay the girl. No problem. Then I go to my answering service to get my messages. I have a message from Angela D'Angelo telling me what a fucking piece of shit I am, how dare I bounce a check on her friend, she's going to the fucking magazines, she's going to ruin my name, she's going to fuck me up and fuck me out of this business because I dared to write a bad check. It's not my check. I haven't written a bad check to anybody. I paid for the scenes. So I give David Aaron Clark another check. He goes to my bank and cashes it. I called the girl and said David's check did not clear this account at Bank of America, but he has cash for you. Be here in twenty minutes and he'll hand you the cash.

"She arrives 20 minutes later, she's so stoned she can't get through the front door of the building. Eventually David goes out to the street. She's standing there, 'oh man, I'm so fucking stoned.' He gives her the cash. He takes back his check. The girl is paid. There's no great problem except the incredible hysteria of threats from this person who has to wait, my goodness, until the afternoon to have her check cashed. Nobody refused to pay her. Nobody made an issue. From her very first telephone call she was told that no matter what the outcome was, she would have cash by 2pm that afternoon. At 2pm she had cash. Exactly as she was told. The incident was precipitated by the fact that the Bank of America did not clear David Aaron Clark's check over night. It's a problem. We apologize to her for the problem, but it's kind of out of our control. Beyond that, I don't see what more I can do to facilitate somebody then to immediately take charge of the situation and give her the cash. If I hadn't had a meeting to go out to at 10 in the morning when I first spoke to her, I wouldn't have asked her to wait for four hours.

"That four hours seemed to be the desperation of her life to precipitate this aging, fucking hooker [D'Angelo] to call me and threaten to fucking slander me all over the industry because I supposedly had written a bad check. The girl never had a check from me but she got cash from me. It was dealt with immediately. That's the story.

"Ask DK about how he came into my office and the girl was on the phone and absolutely, categorically denied that there was any mishandling of anything. She told DK that I raped her. She apparently told a couple of other people the same thing. That's why I called her on it. She categorically denied everything and said it was all Angela D'Angelo. The girl is psychotic. She got her money last Friday. This is such a non-issue. The only problem is with Angela D'Angelo. She brought me two stupid, fucking scenes that she shot and tried to sell them to me. I told her they were garbage. In fact, I kept Angela D'Angelo's message from Friday. It starts off with her talking about the two scenes that she shot.

This is what DK has to say about the incident in Bone's office where DK heard Domore denying the rape charges..

DK: "I was there on the squawk box to listen. She said, 'you didn't try to rape me at all.' That's why she did a blowjob scene with him after this alleged incident."

G. Ross: "Were you repping her at the time?"

DK: "Not at the time she was there in his office with Angela D'Angelo. A few days later I began to represent her. She was referred to my by Angela D'Angelo."

G. Ross: "How did you get involved in all this?"

DK: "What happened was, I was taking her around to get her work. I had mentioned to Angela that I was taking her to Cream. I don't know much about John, and Angela told me he was a horrible human being and he does these terrible things to girls and wants to fuck them all before he puts them on film. I didn't know that. Angela said John had tried to rape Mia. I said, really? I'm not going to take her over there if that's the case if he's going to degrade her as a human being because she wants to fuck for a living. That's how I got involved. I had to go to Bone's for something else. I mentioned to him what Angela had said about his raping this girl. I said why are people saying this about you, I'm concerned. He said this never happened. This is fabrication. 'Angela D'Angelo doesn't like me. She's pissed that I wouldn't buy her movie.' He got Mia on the phone and verified that he never did try to rape her. That's why she did a blowjob scene for him, later after this non-existent incident."

D'Angelo, by the way, is currently feature dancing and was just in San Francisco recently at the Market Street Cinema. "I'm producing now," she says. "I'm selling scenes. I'm trying to do what Biff Malibu of Anabolic did. That's how he got big. I guess I'm on the right track." D'Angelo said she'll do her own camerawork and editing - from a woman's point-of-view.

D'Angelo was at Curveball 99 Sunday and said she had fans from years ago come to see her from San Diego. "They're hardcore fans and have followed me since Suckoya. The same thing happened to me in San Francisco when long-time fans came out to see me. They gave me flowers on stage. I thought people forgot about me. It's good to be back, but I don't want other people to go through this [The Bone incident], she said. "

Kristi Myst Gets Put on Tit Notice With Choke Slam

Six foot-two-inch WWF-ECW icon Nicole Bass choke-slammed Kristi Myst not once but twice at the XPW show last Friday at the Reseda Country Club. The second time was apparently for Kristi's taking her top off earlier in the evening and flashing the crowd. Rob Black said he called Kristi on the carpet over the tit incident, "and she acted all innocent," said Black. "She could have gotten us into fucking trouble," Black mused. Nonetheless, just to make his point really clear, Black had Bass do the slam but made sure Kristi didn't get too slammed. Black was asked why Bass, a headliner, would have come out earlier in the show to chaperone Damien Steele in a steel cage match against Big Dick Dudley, which, under ordinary circumstances is a main event, show-closer.

Black said Bass had to grab a red-eye at LAX to get back to New York to attend a Howard Stern entourage event at Yankee Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Internet Date Leads To Barbituate Overdose; Sex Charges

A Charlotte North Carolina school teacher is accused of using the Internet to lure a 15-year-old girl into a sexual encounter at the girl's home in nearby Concord, police said.

Police report the girl had met Billy Joe Manning Jr., 38, on the Internet and gave him her home address. Manning told her he was 21 years old. In exchange, the girl was given his cellular phone number.

When Manning arrived at her home last week, police said the girl walked to his vehicle to talk with him. She was carrying a can of soda. As her brother called her back to the house, Manning allegedly laced her drink with what police believe were barbiturates. When she returned, he allegedly exposed himself, fondled the girl's breasts and demanded that she perform oral sex on him, police said.

When the girl's mother came outside to investigate, the suspect drove off, police said. The girl became increasingly lethargic, and her family drove her to a nearby hospital where she was admitted to the intensive care unit for a barbiturate overdose. She was later released.

Police traced Manning through his cellular phone number and arrested him Friday night.

Manning is charged with soliciting sex with a child by computer, taking indecent liberties with a child, and contaminating food or drink with a controlled substance. He posted $5,000 bond and was released pending a court appearance next month, police said.

When he was arrested, Manning told police that he was an unemployed artist. But when a photo of the suspect appeared on the local television news Monday, several viewers called police to identify Manning as an art teacher at Quail Hollow Middle School in Charlotte, who has been on staff there for 16 years, teaching sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders.

Manning was suspended without pay Monday pending the outcome of the case.

Zoe writes: "Hi Gene, I was wondering if you can do me a favor? I think lately there has been some confusion about ME and another girl in the biz named Zoe. Now I haven't really done a lot of homework about her, but I wouldn't know where to start. I was just wondering if you could help me clear up some of the confusion for the people out there and maybe give me some tips on what else I can do to get her and I separated, besides me changing my name LOL. Thanks a lot babydoll. Talk to you soon. Love ya, Zoe (The Blonde One)."

Judge Gene rules: "Possession's nine-tenths of the law. You were the first Zoe. You get to keep your name and blond hair."

Justice Howard writes: "Hello Gene, I'm writing to ask a favor of you, if you would be so kind. I've recently gotten my domain name back and am presently rebuilding my website. I am trying to get rid of all the people who, are "meta tagging" my name on the web. I'm sure you know what that is, it's when they list your name as being on their site, to pull traffic to their site, but you are nowhere on there at all. It is an illegal, and unethical misapporpriation of your private name. At any rate, there were a few of them, one of them being : xxxxxxxxx.com The chicks name who is webmaster is .... She, apparently, is an A.D. for Al Borda & Jay Shanihan, neither of whom I have met. And so, I email her asking her nicely to remove my name from her site. She emails me back saying who the hell am I and what business is it of mine? I mail her back and tell her to ask around, that she will find out exactly who I am. Then I send her another email asking her for an expedient and gracious removal of my name. Then comes this reply: FUCK YOU This is something so minor I dont want to bother my lawyer MR. DICKMAN (what a name , huh!!!!!) with it. I was wondering if you might be able to be of some assistance in this matter. My emails to her have always been courteous & civil and I dont think I deserved this kind of reply WHEN THEY ARE THE ONES IN THE WRONG in this situation. Id sure appreciate it if you might be able to help. Let me know. Thanks!"

Peeping Is Now a Crime

While Sasha Gabor rots in jail with wistful dreams of Norway and its mighty fjords occupying his mind, Gov. Gray Davis has signed into law another significant bill - this one making it a crime for voyeurs to use hidden video cameras to look up the skirts of unsuspecting women.

The law, sponsored by Assemblyman Dick Ackerman (R-Fullerton), prohibits secretly videotaping or photographing another person under or through their clothing with the intent of personal gratification.

Current ``Peeping Tom'' laws only prohibit looking "through a hole or opening into a bathroom, changing room or any other area that has a reasonable expectation of privacy."

The new law, which takes effect January 1, and carries with it a $1,000 fine and a misdemeanor sentence of up to six months in jail, would extend protections to any place there is a reasonable expectation of privacy. Illegal photos would be defined as those taken of someone's body or undergarments for the purpose of arousal or sexual gratification.

Ackerman's original bill made the offense a felony, but he amended it to reduce the penalty to a misdemeanor. The California Attorneys for Criminal Justice had complained in a letter to Ackerman that a felony conviction for video peeping might put someone in prison for life under California's three-strikes sentencing law.

"It was time to put a stop to those who would victimize women by using the latest technology to invade their privacy and make a dirty profit,'' said Ackerman. "We can now penalize these voyeurs for their crimes."

Technological advances have allowed some cameras to be as small as a pager or disguised in a water bottle or boom box. Voyeurs can film someone as they go up an escalator, or place a bag with surveillance equipment under women's skirts while they're waiting in line somewhere. Ackerman heard about such practices and wrote the new law.

The measure was pushed by Anaheim police, who were frustrated last year over their inability to prosecute a man using a hidden video camera at Disneyland to take voyeuristic pictures.

The man, using a long-handled shopping bag, had staked out at least 30 women over a 16 hour period and had taken more than an hour of video by surreptitiously placing a camera with a zoom lens and automatic focus so that it pointed up the women's skirts. Although some of the women knew something was amiss--the tape showed them moving away from the man or otherwise showing discomfort--none of them were aware of exactly what was happening, said Anaheim Police Sgt. Bob Conklin. Conklin, who handled the Disneyland case, said sophisticated technology makes the voyeurs hard to spot.

"This guy we caught had an amazing camera,'' he said. ``The women clearly had no idea what he was doing." Conklin said some women moved away from the man, but no one seemed to notice the camera.

"He had it in a shopping bag and was amazingly brazen,'' he said. ``He would get up very close to women who were walking arm- in-arm with their male companion or children."

To their frustration, police and prosecutors could find no crime that applied to the man's acts.

"We tried eavesdropping, assault and battery, aiding and abetting, and indecent exposure," Conklin said. "We looked at everything we could."

Conklin said similar incidents were reported in other Orange County areas. A few cases prosecuted as disorderly conduct were thrown out because the law didn't fit the situation.

Video stalking cases have been reported in other states, including Virginia, which has enacted a law banning videotaping people undressing or in their underwear without their consent. Some of the videos appear on "'up-skirt" sites on the Internet, which are not regulated by the new law.

Since the bill was introduced by Ackerman, publicity surrounding such activities has doubled business on at least one Internet site run out of Southern California, according to Andrew Drake.

"This has created a whole new generation of people who probably weren't even aware they were voyeuristic," said Drake, marketing director at Pixis International, which runs the site upskirt.com Web site. "All this bill is going to do is create a underground feel and probably make it appeal to a broader number of people. Prohibition. How did that work?" Drake said the company is "only giving people what they want."

"People are intrigued to look at what they're not supposed to," Drake said. Signing a name on a piece of paper, Drake says, can't change human nature.

Drake, says he doesn't expect any downturn in traffic to his Web site. In fact, he says, all the publicity the new law has generated will probably mean more business.

"The human psyche has always been intrigued with viewing things that are not supposed to be seen," said Drake. "People have always wanted to know what their neighbors were doing. Now technology has put them in a place where they can actually see what the neighbor is doing."

Drake said outlawing the practice of taking the pictures probably makes it more appealing.

"It's like drugs, making it illegal will probably create a lot more people who do it," Drake said. "It's a rebel thing. If it was a thrill before, now it will be even more of a thrill."

Drake said people who take the pictures get excitement from following unsuspecting women.

"The type of people who do this thing enjoy the chase," said Drake. "The only reward is the excitement of the adventure."

His California-based site, which offers membership for $6.95, is for those 18 and older. It does not pay for submissions, but offers tips and started a ``V-team'' of aggressive voyeurs.

Drake's site will not be affected by the law, and he said he didn't think it would cut down on submissions. Drake said about 65 percent of the pictures on the site are staged using models. The rest, he said, are submitted via e-mail.

"Not every female has the perfect rear end," he said. "There are a lot of couples who get kicks out of doing this and seeing their picture on the Web site.''

While the bill prohibits the taping, it does not address the use of such tapes once they are made. Drake said his company does not secretly tape anyone. He said most of the pictures on his Web site - one of dozens of such spots on the Internet - are staged using models. Drake said he supports the new law and frowns on illegal activity. He said he thinks the awareness generated by discussion of the legislation has been a good thing.

"People need to be more aware of their surroundings in this day and age and not be so free," he said. "We'd like to believe we can go around leaving our front doors unlocked, but we can't anymore."

Drake said he isn't worried about his supply drying up because of the new law.

"This site is set up as an entertainment entity," Drake said, "and the users who come here are aware, or they should be aware, it's a pure fantasy site and that a good number of the images are staged by models mixed in with images sent in by video voyeurs across the world."

Michael Bustamente, press secretary for Davis, said, "The bill addresses the need to punish a despicable act of behavior: filming innocent women without their knowledge in a lewd manner.

"It is necessary that we protect the privacy of those targeted individuals."

A similar incident occurred since the Disneyland one at the California State Fair in Sacramento. In May, police caught a man taking pictures behind the portable toilets at the Bay to Breakers race in Golden Gate Park. He was let go after he surrendered his film.

Jasmin St. Claire Maces Big Dick; Kristi Myst Choke Slammed and Bitch Stunned

It was hard to tell which was the main event at XPW Friday night - Kristi Myst shucking her bra to the howling delight of fans, Lizzy Borden being censured in her opening strut-striptease, or Jasmin St. Claire macing Big Dick Dudley, allowing Damien Steel to pin him in a steel cage match.

Steele pinned Big Dick when Jasmin St. Claire came through the ring and sprayed mace in Dick's eyes allowing Steele to hit the Real Deal and pin the big man. Earlier in the night, Steele debuted his new bodyguard Nicole Bass. Bass destroyed the two luchadores in the opening bout and then helped Jasmin destroy "Miss Xtreme" Kristi Myst. Jasmin gave Myst a stone bitch stunner and Bass chokeslammed her twice.

Also, "White Trash" Johnny Webb debuted his new manager, Missy Hyatt, in his bout with "Mr. 80's" Dynamite D. Webb came out and interrupted D's speech on how 1980s wrestling was far superior to wrestling in the 90's. Webb told D, "If you want to be successful today, you need to develop a hardcore attitude." Webb then said that he actually thanked guys like D and Phenomenal Phil for showing him the errors in his old ways and that things would now be different. "And you know what they say," Webb said to D, "behind every good man, is a great woman." The arena lights went out and when they came back on Missy Hyatt was standing in the entrance way with a cigarette in her mouth and a Singapore cane in her hand. Once she entered the ring, Dynamite D attempted to convince her that she was with the wrong guy. She was from the 80s, he reasoned. However, he sealed his own fate when he told Missy that he was from the old school and that she was just old. Hyatt cracked D over the head with the cane and later presented it to White Trash. Webb defeated D after repeated whacks with his new found Singapore sling.

In other actionJake Lawless defeated Homeless Jimmy after he wrapped him in barbed wire and belly-to-back suplexed him over the top rope.

Cybil was scheduled to take on Phenomenal Phil, but as Cybil's music played, he did not come out. Music unheard before in the XPW Arena then played and Michael Modest came out to make his XPW debut and defeat the Phenomenal one.

The West Side NGZ, Chronic and Big Rott, destroyed Los Vatos Locos, Danger and Felony. After the beating of their lifetimes, Los Vatos were futher humiliated. Danger was hung with a noose over the top rope, and Felony had his hair cut off by the West Siders.

Kid Kaos defeated Pancho Killa. With his crew decimated just moments before, Killa had to go to ringside alone, not giving him the advantage he had against Kaos last time they met. The 20-year old future superstar was able to use his speed and agility to keep Pancho from destryoing him with power moves and pulled out the victory.

Kristian Blood and Supreme were scheduled to have a rematch from their July 31 encounter, but there were other plans in the work. Donovan Morgan came to the ring in an XPW shirt and claimed to be the real Mr. XPW, the real future of professional wrestling, and the one who was going to knock Kristian Blood off of his pedest
