Kris Kramski told AVN.com Wednesday he has begun casting his next film for Hustler Video.
Kramski last directed the critically acclaimed America XXX: A Tribute to Sex & Rock and Roll, the 2003 Best Film nominee which won AVN Awards for Best Music and Best Art Direction in January.
Kramski said the yet-to-titled feature would be shot over the course of several weeks late this summer with a significant budget. The director said he would consider the best talent available for the high-profile project.
"The film will be an original story based on Octave Mirbeau's novel about a social-climbing chambermaid, and the upper-class home in which she works," Kramski told AVN.com. "Luis Bunuel in 1964 became the second filmmaker, after Jean Renoir, to adapt this story. However, Bunuel has updated the book by a quarter-century and veers from its words in order to stay true to its spirit."
Kramski said the story follows Celestine, who arrives at the Rabour-Monteil residence where she encounters the family patriarch who is a foot fetishist who can't resist trying to seduce every maid. It also follows his resistant wife who finds his "constant" demands for sex overwhelming, and Joseph, a murderous man-servant who believes in maintaining France for the French and who wants Celestine for his bride.
"It's a powerful and politically prescient film that speaks to the present day as much as of the time in which it was made," the director said. "? We are all working on a tight schedule at Hustler for this to be ready by the end of September."
Kramski continued, "LFP is really excited about the film and they were prepared to allow me a budget of $450,000 to do it. I laughed because these budgets aren't common. But they are so ambitious. I said that was overkill. We don't have those types of budgets in the adult world. I told them I could make a wonderful film for half that amount."
The French filmmaker's most recent productions for Hustler have been concept-oriented. He mixed hard-hitting music with slick, stylized imagery in America XXX, Pornovision and DJ Groupie. Pornovision earned the AVN Award for Best All-Sex DVD in 2002.
Prior to that, Kramski directed story-driven features such as Free Sex on Earth (Vivid), the multiple AVN Award-winning Chloe (1999), Models, Lisa, Belle de Jour, Cape Sin and An American in Paris – all for Sin City.
