ICANN Approves User Groups To Help Run Net

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has approved six community user groups in three regions to help bring individual Netizens into ICANN's activities at the local, regional, and issue levels, PC World reported December 17.

These at-large groups, ICANN announced, would be aimed at helping to get more understanding of and participation in the Internet's governing process, such as it is. The group approvals come six months after the ICANN board of directors approved a framework to set up such groups, with ICANN president Paul Twomey hoping they help different Internet sectors be heard more distinctly.

ICANN's At-Large Advisory Committee certified four such groups for Europe, one for the Asian Pacific and Australian region, and one for Latin America and the Caribbean island region.

"The committee has been encouraging interested, qualified groups in all geographic regions to become certified At-Large members," PC World said. You can get more information about At-Large applications through ICANN on the Web.
