IBM Testing Network Troubleshooter

Big Blue is aiming to help companies get rid of a big headache - network glitches. IBM has released a test developer tool for "log and trace" software that's designed to help find and fix network server problems, autonomic (self-optimizing) computing director Ric Telford told CNET.com.

Telford said system administrators spend large amounts of time just interpreting and relating log-file information to find the source of a problem. "It's a very time-consuming, human-intensive task," he told CNET.com. "The value of autonomic computing is (in) making the system more self-managing and reducing complexity."

IBM hopes that automating repetitive manual tasks can help companies streamline operations and free technology professionals "for more valuable work," CNET.com said. And they're not the only ones working on such network fixing solutions - Sun Microsystems's N1 and Hewlett-Packard's Utility Data Center have similar aims, if distinct approaches.

"IBM's log and trace software is designed to put the log data from different software servers into a common format, so that administrators can track the sequence of events more quickly," CNET.com said.
