The Sex Film Project Scratches An Angry Itch

John Cameron Mitchell likes porn. Sure, we all do. But the writer/director of Hedwig And the Angry Inch sees a void in the current adult library; people don't walk away from porn movies saying, "I laughed, I cried, I came." With The (As yet untitled) Sex Film Project, he is hoping to create a hardcore film that doesn't need to be fast-forwarded through.rnrn

Seeking to create "a seriously humorous exploration of romantic and sexual relationships in a modern New York City pansexual bohemian environment", Mitchell is casting actors and non-actors through his website. Video submissions must be ten minutes or less, and rehearsals will begin in late March/early April.rnrn

"We'd borrow some of the rehearsal/writing techniques of filmmakers like Mike Leigh, Lars Von Trier and John Cassavetes," the website states, and goes on to mention that all players must be at least 18 and that safety is of highest concern for the producers.rnrn

Enough about the sex already. What about the characters'rnrn

"A character might be a prostitute or some kind of hands-on sex therapist. Maybe somebody stays home and sucks his own dick all day (a metaphorically arresting image - please list such an ability in your resume under Special Skills)," Mitchell writes. The story will rise out of improvised scenes between actors who are comfortable with each other.rnrn

"We welcome talented, brave, like-minded people to join us in this unusual, possibly ill-advised, certainly trailblazing enterprise."
