Hooters Fundraiser Gets Flak from City

City officials were criticizing organizers of the “Hooters for Neuters” bikini contest fundraiser for purportedly degrading women.

The Los Angeles Times reported today that some officials are asking the Hooters restaurant chain to reconsider its contest even though it would benefit the city department of Animal Services’ spay and neuter programs.

Fliers promoting the July 13 event at the Highlands nightclub in Hollywood, showed a buxom bikini-clad model touting the contest. New fliers show a dog wearing a t-shirt saying “Hooters for Neuters.”

Councilwoman Jan Perry complained that the city department, which approved the contest, had “crossed the line” by agreeing to the fundraiser.

Likewise, city Controller Laura Chick said the contest runs contrary to the city’s efforts in support of progressive programs aimed at empowering women and to reduce discrimination in the workplace.

Animal Services Director Ed Boks apologized to the council about the contest, but said that it would go on as scheduled.

Boks said the owners of Hooters approached him about the fund-raiser about a month ago and that Budweiser designed the ads without consulting the Animal Services Department.
