Group Wants More Porn Trials

The economy is great, unemployment is low, global enemies are talking peace and crime is down. No matter, Morality in Media has a bone to pick with the Clinton administration. There just aren't enough obscenity trials going on. \n In 1992, the last year of the Bush administration, U.S. attorneys were pursuing 42 cases in which obscenity violations were the lead charge. In 1996, there were only six prosecutions. Of the 93 U.S. attorneys in the nation, only four started prosecutions mainly over obscenity. Morality in Media (www.netcom.com/~mimnyc) said that is just not right. \n "The single most important reason that pornography is booming today is the scandalously poor record of federal obscenity law enforcement," said Robert W. Peters, Morality in Media president. "This is the Clinton failure that hurts America far more than the Monica Lewinsky affair." \n As a result of Clinton's obscenity prosecution record, he has become the darling of the porn industry, Peters said. The organization president cited Clinton's endorsement from AVN during the 96 election and a quote, from a porn distributor printed in TV Guide. "Clinton is a total supporter of the industry...he's always been on our team." the porn distributor stated. \n Comparing Clinton's first five years to four years of President Bush, obscenity prosecutions have been cut by more than half. During the Bush years, there were 223 cases filed in which obscenity was the main charge while Clinton could take credit for only 105. What is even more alarming, according to Morality in Media folks, the numbers have been declining each year. \n What's to be done? Letter writing, of course. \n Morality in Media will hold its 11th annual White Ribbon Against Pornography campaign during Pornography Awareness Week, which starts Oct. 25. During the campaign, the organization will encourage people to write to their senators to demand an inquiry into why courts are not being tied up with more obscenity cases. \n Peters said obscenity leads men into sexual addiction, degrades women, ruins marriages, spreads diseases, encourages crime and undermines morality. He said the well-being of families and children will depend "in significant part" on a reversal of Clinton's policies.
