Graphic Designer Alaska Launches New Site

Multiple AVN Award-nominated graphic designer, Alaska — best known for his work with VCA and Vivid Entertainment Group's alternative arm, Vivid Alt. — has launched a new website. The site, called Six Months of Light, displays dozens of Alaska's designs for clients such as Hustler, Digital Sin, and AVN Online.

"In 2003, without any formal design training, I sort of crash-landed into my first graphic design job at Hustler/VCA Pictures," Alaska told AVN.com. "After two years of designing dozens of DVD menus, box covers, and print ads, I derailed myself into the world of freelance." Alaska explained that for the past year and half, he's been involved in everything from t-shirt designs to CDs and DVDs to print ads and websites.

Alaska's work is definitely unique, and has been closely linked to the alt-porn movement in adult. "I think [alt-porn] helps bridge the gap between the porn world and alternative/hip youth culture, who generally see porn as something crafted for middle-aged, midwestern sociopathic men," he said. "Companies are opening their eyes to the fact that their cookie-cutter box covers aren't going to attract this burgeoning market, and they've been coming to me telling me they don't want their box to look like the typical porn cover that glassy eyed customers glance right past…they want something that stands out.

"I think my site not only exhibits my work, but simultaneously shows the zeitgeist of alternative pornography," Alaska added.

Alaska's AVN nominations have ranged from Best Packaging for VCA's Neu Wave Hookers to Best Online Marketing Campaign for Vividalt.com. The Los Angeles based designer's work will also be featured in the forthcoming coffee table book, Sex in Design (Tectum Publishing).
