GayVN Awards Go Intimate

The 2003 GayVN Awards will be a more scaled-down and intimate affair, according to AVN publisher Paul Fishbein.rnrn

The GayVN Awards have been around for twenty years. At one point they were distributed along with the AVN Awards but more recently they have had their own show. Interest in "the GayVNs" has waned in recent years, with some concern over expenses, so this year's event will be a smaller affair.rnrn

AVN's Gay/Bi Managing Editor Jeremy Spencer says that "awards will still be given out and we will not discontinue honoring the best in gay adult entertainment. Nominations will still happen, and votes will still be cast. We will just be scaling down the size of the show to a more intimate, private gathering at a place and date to be announced."rnrn

Asked why the show was being scaled down, Spencer replied, "I think that a lot of people have lost focus on what the awards show is about, and that is supporting the gay adult industry. The awarding of trophies should just be a perk. We are always complaining about how [the gay adult industry] is never given its due but then when it comes time to band together and support ourselves, we let egos take hold and take three steps backward. So I believe that we just don't have the amount of support that we need to continue to have as grand a scale of an awards show. We'll take it down a few notches and invite the nominees to a dinner or a luncheon. We still haven't made a decision as to what kind of event we'll have. But there will be one."rnrn

"Instead of the big show at the Hilton, we'll have a smaller dinner for the wholesalers and distributors," Fishbein told AVN.com. "There'll be some dinner, some drinks, and the awards will be given out after."rnrn

"This year we'll hunker down and decide what we're going to do next year," Fishbein said. That might mean having the Awards at a club with an open bar, attaching the Awards to a convention like the AVN Awards/Expo link, or something entirely new.rnrn

"The GayVN Awards are still around. The gay adult community needs its own awards, and everyone seems excited about having an intimate dinner."rnrn
