Full-Length Movies Come to Cell Phones

If screen size is of little concern then here’s some good news for movie aficionados—you can now watch full-length movies on certain mobile phones.

ROK Entertainment has officially launched their ROK Player, a preloaded memory card that plugs into mobile phones’ multimedia chip (MMC) slot. The films can be watched repeatedly and will run outside of network coverage.

While ROK Entertainment doesn’t have any adult partnerships in place, the company does have interested licensees.

“I have no doubt this technology could be used to great effect by all film studios to create a wholly new platform for content,” ROK marketing director Bruce Renny tells AVNOnline.com. “After all, we’re talking here about having turned the smart phone into a portable DVD player.”

ROK’s first content offering is The Shawshank Redemption, which the company licensed from Granada Ventures. The company also has content deals in place with Sony BMG, Eagle Records, Sanctuary Records, and Aardman Films.

The ROK Player is compatible with 13 varieties of Nokia phones and the Siemens Sx1. Films cost 16.99 pounds ($30) per program from rokplayer.com and select mobile phone stores, but the company expects the price to decrease as interest increases.
