Kalina Ryu was about to call it quits before her career took off thanks to Evil Angel director Jonni Darkko. Moving out to L.A. after filming a bunch of scenes under her former moniker Lilly Ocean, Kalina was barely being booked, the exception being Darkko, who constantly booked her for his films. Sensing something special about the beautiful Asian starlet of Korean descent, Darkko bestowed on Kalina her very own showcase DVD, Kalina Ryu Asian Fuck Doll (she's seen here in a still from the movie).
Now the 29-year-old is in demand, shooting scenes for powerhouse studios Jules Jordan, Hustler and Wicked Pictures, to name a few. And she owes it all to Mr. Darkko himself. "He said, 'Listen, you're amazing. People don't know who you are. Wait until I show them who you are.' He was the only one who believed in me. I am completely thankful to him just for being in my corner and giving me this opportunity. Now people are starting to notice me. I'm super excited and I feel very thankful to him."

Why did you decided to do porn?
I kind of fell into it by accident. It was so fun it didn't seem like work. I had an opportunity to be an extra on Bang Bros. and they were so awesome and nice to me. They kept calling me back whenever they had a scene for me. I wasn't really pursuing porn. I never watched it and I didn't realize how popular Bang Bros. is. I didn't realize anybody would see it. My friends from college, my friends from high school, they found it and they all called me and they were all supportive. I just never knew anything about the porn world. The people that I've met so far I've been so lucky to get to know, it's been so amazing. I'm really excited about this opportunity. It's not like work. I don't want to brag about it. It sounds too cheesy to say how excited I am. [Laughs] I'm just a horny girl, I'm single. I wouldn't have been able to do this before because I was busy with school and dating someone at the time. Now that I'm older I'm not trying to meet strangers at a bar and I don't have time for boyfriends.
What was your first scene and were you nervous or excited your first day on set?
Both, but I would say that they made me feel so comfortable. My first scene was for Party of 3 with Rachel Starr and Mercedes Lynn. They're both so down to earth and I was so excited to be in the presence of two beautiful women that I kind of forgot about the camera. They were really, really nice to me.
Do you like being naked? What's it like having a job where you can be naked at work every day?
I wouldn't say I'm a nudist or an exhibitionist but I am comfortable with my body. I'm not the most beautiful girl in the world and I'm not pretending that I am but I'm just comfortable with myself.
What was your sex life like before porn?
During my relationships we would have sex all the time. When I was single, in between relationships I had a couple of fuck buddies I would call up. And I had needs so I would take care of myself. I'm enjoying being single now for sure.
Has the industry been everything you expected it to be—and how so?
Yes and no. I would say I didn't really have too many expectations. Things had been going slow for me, honestly. I'd been in L.A. for five months and the only person who had shot me really was Jonni Darkko. If it weren't for him taking notice of me I don't know if anybody else would. I'm really grateful to him. I've learned a lot from him. Not having any modeling or acting experience, each time I'm on set I learn something.
Since you're new, which performers do you hope to work with?
I don't know too many names. I have a major crush on Kendra Lust. I love Alby Rydes, I love Luna Star. They're beautiful beyond words.
If you weren't doing porn what in the mainstream world would you be doing or would want to do?
If I wasn't doing porn I'd be working in advertising on the creative side. That's what my major is in. After porn I'd like to paint. I like to paint women in abstract reality so hopefully I can have my porn star girlfriends sit for me. And hopefully with their celebrity status and their fan base, I'll have someone to sell my work to. That's what I'm hoping will happen. So I can make a little money, buy a house on the beach and paint my paintings. Live happily ever after like that.
And walk around naked.
Yeah, that's exactly how I want to do it. [Laughs] It sounds really simple and cheesy but if I don't try then it won't happen.
