Former Focus on Family Journalist Irks Stern by Discussing Sex on Daytime Television

As fans of Howard Stern are aware, the Oprah Winfrey Show recently aired a rerun of a show that included language that would likely be considered indecent. Most listeners are probably not aware of what the offending words were since they were beeped out at least twice when Stern attempted to play the segment in question.

The segment discussed “oral anal sex,” and a “rainbow party,” defined on air as a group oral sex activity where women the girls put lipstick and then, “each one puts her mouth around the penis of the gentleman or gentlemen who are there to receive favors and makes a mark um in a different place on the penis.”

That’s strong language for daytime television and Stern is upset that Winfrey wasn't charged with violating the FCC standards for indecency for the comments, which are similar in nature to the comments made in 2001 on his show that resulted in Infinity Broadcasting being recently served a NALF, a Notice of Apparent Liability of Forfeiture, by the FCC last week.

Stern has been railing against the recent FCC crackdown on indecency since it began, stating that he expects that he’ll be forced off the air in the near future.

Michelle Burford, a writer for O, The Oprah Magazine, was the woman who defined several sexual terms on the Oprah Winfrey episode in question. Burford had interviewed 50 teenage girls and their mothers to find out how much parents knew about their daughter’s sex lives. She appeared on “Is Your Child Living a Double Life?” an episode of that originally aired on October 2, 2003 and was rerun last week.

As part of the segment, Burford defined a number of slang words popular amongst the teenagers she interviewed. “Tossed salad” was a term she defined as “oral anal sex.”

Ironically, prior to joining O, The Oprah Magazine, Burford was journalist for Focus on Family, a conservative Christian group that publishes a number of magazines. Focus on Family advocates stringent enforcement of FCC regulations.

A graduate of Biola University, a Christian college in California, Burford once told a Christian magazine that her goals were to infiltrate mainstream media so she could influence coverage to reflect Christian values.

"Not long after I graduated, I began to wonder how I could make a difference in an industry that is often hostile to the concepts Jesus Christ put forth," Burford told the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. "I wanted to have a voice in the forces that are shaping mainstream culture."

A transcript of the segment in question has been posted on HowardStern.com, Stern's official Website. A portion of the transcript reads:

Oprah: ok so so what is a salad toss?

Michelle: ok a tossed salad is, get ready hold on to your underwear for this one, oral anal sex, So oral sex with the anus is what that would be.

Stern's radio show was cited for a show broadcast in 2001, during which he discussed "blumpkins." A transcript of that show has also been posted on HowardStern.com. A portion of that transcript reads:

HS: Well, a blumpkin is receiving oral sex while you're sitting on a toilet bowl if you are a man. You're sitting on a toilet bowl and uh, while you're evacuating you receive your oral.
