Flying With Hawke: Porn superstar Jason Hawke launches vanity site and dishes on the biz

It's hard in today's increasingly finicky porn climate to define just what it takes to maintain longevity in a performer's career. Certainly good looks, a hot body, a big dick, and energetic performances have a lot to do with it. If those are the criteria, then Jason Hawke is sure to have a very long, prosperous run.

Of course, as anyone familiar with gay porn knows, Hawke already has enjoyed a rather extended career in the triple-X biz. For the past six years, the German-born stud (who still sports a sexy accent though he speaks perfect English) has been pleasing thousands of fans with his boyishly handsome good looks (check out those dimples), his naturally smooth body (thankfully, not overly buffed out), and his energetic performances (Yay, he's versatile!) on camera. From his work with All Worlds (Porn Struck, Seven Deadly Sins: Envy) and Studio 2000 (Men in Exile, Super Shots) to his appearances in films from Falcon (Aftershock), Channel 1 (Starting Young, Wicked), and Hot House (the recently released Trunks), Hawke's super-charged performances in more than 60 skin flicks have endeared him to porn fans all over the world, and, as his manager Jason Sechrest is quick to note, made his name "synonymous with gay porn."

Now Hawke is picking up a camera and taking to the Web, where he has recently launched his own vanity site, the aptly named JasonHawkeXXX.com. A pornucopia of all things Jason, the site features everything from live webcam shows, streaming videos of Hawke's many movies, an online journal, and Hawke's ambitious workout schedule. A way for him to "be my own boss," Hawke says, the site is also a great way for his fans to keep up with his latest appearances and enjoy exclusive, never-before-seen footage of their favorite European-bred hunk.

Hawke is hot, but above and beyond good lucks and an ability to suck cock (which he does rather well, it should be noted), it takes something extra-special to keep a career going. And this is where the secret to Hawke's success is really found. During our extended phone chat, the soft-spoken, relaxed porn star was never anything less than gracious, poised, and surprisingly modest. And in an age where so many adult performers get caught up in ego and self-importance, Hawke's humility is by far the sexiest thing on the porn market today.

Ken Knox: So, tell me about the re-launch of your Web site?

Jason Hawke: Well, I had a site up a few years ago, and I don't even want to talk about that. (Laughs.) It was not a good representation of me. The new site's been up for about three months now, and I have to say I'm really happy with the outcome so far. I have a kick-ass webmaster, who's a great friend of mine. There are a lot of reality shows out there right now in mainstream. I kind of try to do the same thing, just on the porn side. I always have my video camera with me wherever I go and whatever I do, so I try to capture as much as I can and put it on the site.

Is this something you've been wanting to do for a while then?

Oh yeah. This is definitely something I've been wanting to do for a while. The only reason why I didn't start it sooner was that I was just waiting for the right webmaster. And I'm totally happy with Susie, who is my webmaster. She's great.

What plans do you have specifically for the site now?

Just to get as much content as I can get. I'm going to Europe in a few weeks in mid-August, and I'll be there for a while. I'll be doing lots of traveling there as well. Going to lots of cities, lots of countries, and just trying to get as much content and [as many] guys as I can.

You say in the press release you've never done anything this personal. Obviously, you don't see performing sex as a personal act?

Well, yeah, I guess kinda. (Laughs.) I've been doing movies for close to six years now, and there is lots of my private stuff out there already, but with movies, it's a lot of "Cut!" and lighting and this and that. You gotta rearrange your position and cheat out for the cameras, and I don't do that when I film. It's me having sex, and I actually have the camera in my hand. And I'll be taking the camera on all my personal trips, and I'll have it here when I'm in town. There's always someone around. I always manage to get in some kind of trouble. (Laughs.)

The site's based in Europe, right? Are you looking then to infuse it with a European sensibility?

Yes, I would definitely love to have a European feel on there, that's for sure. You can definitely tell the difference between the American stuff and the European stuff. At least I can, so I try to combine in and get a good mix out of both so it's the best of both worlds.

What's the chief difference between American sex and European sex?

(Laughs.) That's a good question.

Europeans are kinkier right?

(Laughs.) Yeah. I think because of how we are raised in Europe, we are a little more open. I wouldn't necessarily say it's nastier… but you probably can because if you go to bars here, you can get away with a lot more things. But I wouldn't say that Europeans are dirtier in bed than Americans. It's just that Americans try to hide it a little more than Europeans. I'd say behind closed doors the same stuff is going on, if not worse stuff.

Yeah, we do fisting here too.

(Laughs.) Yeah, right?

So, do you like being able to share yourself through your online journal and column for JasonCurious.com?

Yeah. I like to share a lot of myself. I like to keep some things private for myself, but I guess I have a lot to say. It's just fun. I'm definitely enjoying what I'm in doing and hopefully sooner or later I'll be starting my own little production company and go that way. I've been in the industry for six years, and I'm still having a kick-ass time, but I want more time to do my own stuff and go behind the scenes. Who knows what the future brings, but right now that's what I have my future set on.

What's your favorite part of having your own Web site?

Being my own boss and being in charge. That's what I like most. And definitely all the pleasure that comes with it. (Chuckles.) When I'm filming other guys, sometimes I can't believe that this is actually my job. Like, I'll go, "I can't believe I'm working right now! I'm getting paid for this!"

Buddy, I say the exact same thing! (Laugh.) How do you hope to make your site stand out from the other porn star sites? Will you be doing anything unique for your site?

Just with the stuff that I'm doing. I want to do it a little more real, not as fake as other sites. I know a lot of other sites have live shows and whatever, but I'm trying to make it a little more personal and not just sex. I want more behind the scenes and just stupid, silly stuff in between that's still entertaining.

What about future plans for the site? Where do you hope to take JasonHawkeXXX.com in the coming weeks and months?

I want to build it up as much as I can and work with the people I want to work with. I like working with [my manager] Jason Sechrest, and I'd like to build it up together with him. I always say about this industry that there's a lot of people that talk bad about the industry and say it's sleazy, and yeah, there are some sleazy people, but there are some really good business people as well. I try to stay away from the unprofessional people and try to work with the professional people that know what they want. Then everybody's happy at the end.

You've been in the porn business for quite a while now. What have you learned about yourself as a result of your experiences in XXX?

Hmmm, I've definitely learned a lot over the last six years, that's for sure. I've learned to be more comfortable with myself. As an example, there are a lot of guys who come into the industry and when they start out they're all cool and whatever, and then they kind of get all caught up in the bullshit and they become a different person. But I hear all the time from people who know me really well—and from people that I haven't seen for a while… they say, "You're still the same person." And that's something that I'm really proud of—that I'm having fun with it, but I'm not getting caught up with it. I'm still as real as it comes. What you see is what you get.

How do you maintain that sense of self in a business like this one?

I don't know. It's a tough business, and it's definitely very hard to stay true to yourself. Like, when I go on dance gigs, there were several times when I'd walk in and the other dancers at the club wouldn't talk to me, and I would try and get them to warm up to me, and they would say that there were other porn stars that would come in [who were really catty] and so they figured I was the same way. A lot of people have the wrong impression of people in the industry because there are guys who think they are all that, but I always say, "Let people talk to me first and they'll find out I'm just a regular guy like all of them." If you're cool, I'm going to be cool back to you.

How did you come to get involved in porn in the first place?

I always had it in my head that I wanted to try. I was down in Venice Beach, and an agent gave me his card, and that was pretty much it. But sadly, he was one of the people who give the industry a bad name, because he's one of the sleaziest people you will meet in your whole life. When he first gave me his card, he told me he was a modeling agent for sports clothing and stuff, and, of course, it came down to being porn. Luckily, I was already thinking about doing it. (Laughs.) And then the best thing that happened to me in this industry is that, after I made a couple movies for his company, I figured out he was full of shit and then I was introduced to Chi Chi LaRue, and everything changed from there.

Had you been a fan of porn prior to your involvement in it?

Yeah, I always thought it was hot, but I just always watched it for pleasure. But then when I watched Boogie Nights and saw the whole lifestyle, it totally got me. That was the first time that I said, "That's pretty cool. I'd like to try that."

Wait. Boogie Nights?!? Are you sure we watched the same movie? The one where they all spiraled out of control with drugs and tragedy? Explain yourself, young man!

(Laughs.) Well, I love living my life in the fast lane. I guess that's probably part of why I like the movie so much. You gotta take the goods with the bads, 'cause that's life! We all have a choice and I choose to go a different way than Mark Walhberg's character in the movie.

Thank God. What do your friends think of your career in porn?

A lot of them didn't know at all that I was doing movies. I just told some of them a year ago, and they said, "You know, it so fits. It's a totally crazy thing, but of course, you're doing it!" (Laughs.) They come from a totally different world, and live a totally different lifestyle, but I was always doing my own thing, so…

What is it that you like most about performing in adult entertainment? What is it that keeps you coming… back?

Hmmm, I guess I like to show off. I like to be in front of the camera. And I definitely like having sex too. (Laughs.) I think that's why I keep coming back. And I've met some of my best friends in the industry, and I never would have met my boyfriend [fellow porn performer Jeremy Jordan] if I hadn't done porn. As far as I know, we are the longest-lasting relationship in gay porn, and I think that's pretty cool as well. And that's something else I'm proud of, to show that you can have a relationship in porn.

How did you meet Jeremy?

We met on the set of {Jocks Video release) The Violation. He'd actually been in the business a year longer than me. We were in the same scene together, and it was actually a threeway scene. It was totally cheesy, but it was a beautiful location up in the Russian River area, and we met there and it just clicked instantly.

You guys have performed together in quite a few movies since you've been a couple. Do you find it difficult to open that intimacy up to the cameras at all?

Not at all. We've done like six or seven movies together, and it's cool. I mean, sex at home is always better. That's the good thing about the site, too, because it's more private, because when I film sex, it's more real. It's different when there are a whole bunch of people around, but we're both used to it, so it's not a problem for us either way.

Do you think it's easier to have a partner who's also part of the business?

Oh, definitely. I think that's a main thing for us. I'm sure they are a lot of people who aren't in the industry who are cool with it, but I'd say that definitely helps. And we just talk about a lot of different things and try to be as open as we can. I don't know what the key is. I guess it's just being yourself and being as real as you can. So far, so good.

If you weren't doing porn, what career might you want to have your hands in?

I would probably be in the fitness industry, like a trainer or something like that. Otherwise, God only knows where I would be. (Laughs.)

How much longer do you see yourself staying in the business?

Right now, I want to take it easy with doing movies. I'm thinking about not doing any movies and just doing stuff for my Internet site. I've done 60 movies, and that's enough. I might do one here and there, but right now it's all about the site.

I'm sure the porn directors will have a conniption when they read that! OK, One last question. Finish this sentence for me: My dick is to me like…

Like the Bible is to the Pope, because I worship it every day!

Praise Jesus! Can I get an Amen here already?
