Fake Sites Snagging Child Porners: U.K. Law Enforcement

Faking them out is working wonders for Britain's child porn battle, with the National Crime Squad saying fake police-generated Websites have begun appearing in the wake of a telecommunications report saying as many as 250,000 attempts to see child porn online were discovered.

The NCS said detectives monitoring the fake sites gather the child porn surfers' personal details entered into the fake sites, appearing when keywords are searched for, among other police techniques being applied since telecom BT revealed just how deep is Britain's Internet child porn problem.

BT's Clean Feed system is said to be blocking about 10,000 attempts a day on average to get to child porn, with the system barring access to certain sites and showing "Website not found" messages to users, according to the BBC. The 250,000 attempts BT reported came in the first three weeks of the Clean Feed system's application, the BBC said, averaging an estimated 10,000-20,000 attempts a day.

The BT effort has impressed the British government enough that Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced a government-supported summit in the works to explore ways to stop Internet child porn access. The summit will invite Internet companies in September to join the discussion and problem-solving.

Blair praised the BT initiative. “We would encourage any measure which other internet service providers can take to reduce the availability of such images," he was quoted in the British press as telling the House of Commons. “And we will be inviting leading service providers to a meeting in September to consider what can be learned from the experience of the BT initiative and how that can be extended across the piece. This is a serious issue of public concern and we are acting on it... this despicable trade in children’s misery.”
