FIRST GAY WEB BANK OPENS MONDAY

To coincide with both Columbus Day and National Coming Out Day, the world's first Internet bank aimed explicitly at the homosexual community opened for business Monday.

Business Wire says G & L Internet Bank brought forth a complete array of FDIC-insured services, including small business loans, mortgages, checking, and certificates of deposit.

Founder Steven Dunlap tells Business Wire the bank was set up to redress discrimination for gays trying to obtain ordinary banking services, but the bank will be open to any depositor whatever their sexual orientation.

G & L Internet Bank opened today -- Columbus Day and National Coming Out Day -- to illustrate the philosophy behind its mission, Business Wire says. G & L is a bank that is always open -- unlike many other banks that will be closed today.

Demographic surveys suggest there are approximately 21 million gay people living in the United States, the wire continues, with the population having a higher disposable income than the general population. About 9.2 million homosexuals are part of the online world, with the number expected to reach 17.1 million in five years, says Computer Economics.
