The Federal Communications Commission's continuing effort to scrub the nation's airwaves may be focusing next on daytime television - specifically soap operas.
FCC commissioner Michael J. Copps told The Washington Times earlier this week that he recently happened upon questionable daytime content while channel surfing.
"It was pretty steamy stuff for the middle of the afternoon," the Times reported Copps as telling reporters following a National Association of Broadcasters summit.
Over-the-air television and radio stations cannot broadcast material involving sexual and excretory functions between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., when children might tune in, according to FCC rules.
The paper also reported that the FCC had received approximately 700 complaints about a recent episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show, while noting that Howard Stern had been encouraging listeners to contact the agency.
