Expand Target-Ad-For-Pay Program: Google

Expanding their program to let small Websites put targeted ads on their content pages and get paid per ad click, Google announced a self-serve AdSense program June 18 to help lesser-trafficked sites format quickly to take ads matching keywords in the pages' content Reuters reported.

Google gets "a hefty share of revenues" from paid listings linking ads to keywords used in searches, Reuters said, and the new service is Google's bid to give their network of over 100,000 advertisers targeted venues to tap new customers.

Dozens of unnamed sites took part in an AdSense trial, Google told the wire service, but the search kings didn't say how many operators signed up or how much money they were averaging through the program. But Infoplease.com Web producer Erin Martin said in a statement that that company was making twice the money they made with other ad programs.

"Google AdSense improves the overall web user experience by bringing relevant, unobtrusive, text ads to web pages rather than disruptive, unrelated ads such as pop-ups and animations," Google co-fouder Sergey Brin said in a statement. "By providing website publishers with an effective way to monetize content pages on their sites, Google AdSense strengthens the long-term business viability of content creation on the web."

The ads are "not flashy, obnoxious, or intrusive," said Martin. "We like giving our readers what they want – ads that are helpful." With Google AdSense, we immediately made twice the money we had been making with any other type of advertising."

Google editors review each application to make sure the Websites meet "editorial guidelines," Google said. If approved, the Website publisher logs into an accont and cuts and pastes small HTML coding into the site's pages or ad server, and publishers can monitor ad performance once it's up and running, the search company continued.
