Ex-Fox Consultant Not Guilty of Movie, Software Piracy

Former Fox Cable Networks consultant Kevin Sarna was acquitted of movie and software piracy February 18, after a jury found he had stopped using a Fox-owned server before the illegal downloading in question was detected.

Sarna had maintained someone else had used the username he formerly used and did the downloading in that name. He was one of six charged with running the server that included illegal copies of three hit films and other software programs said to be worth $2,500.

The other five defendants reportedly pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges while Sarna held onto his claim of innocence

Sarna at Fox was responsible for setting up a server for partner company National Geographic, Inc., and prosecutors said that during that time a warez, or piracy, server, had been set up at the same time, a server investigator discovered in November 2003.

The user name used to download the pirated movies and software was “blunt!” and published reports indicated three co-defendants claimed Sarna used the name.
