First Amendment fighter Elyse Metcalf was profiled in the Cincinnati Enquirer today, in a section dedicated to revisiting past stories. She spoke candidly about her life since her 2001 defeat of obscenity charges, including the Jennifer Dute case, the fire that left her severely burned, and the reason why she entered the adult retail business and what keeps her in it.
Metcalf survived a fire at her home in February, which left her with burns on nearly fifty percent of her body. Friends kept her business, Elyse’s Passion, running until she was able to return to work – though what most would have deemed a setback turned into an inspiration.
"I was spared for a reason. One of my greatest dreams for my passion as a sexual advocate has been realized," Metcalf told the Enquirer.
The “dream” Metcalf was referring to was the recent appeals court decision that threw out a pandering obscenity conviction against Jennifer Dute. Metcalf’s case was mentioned frequently in the court’s decision. Her case has also been mentioned during legal debates regarding the current Flynt family conflict with Hamilton County officials.
