EX-COP FINED FOR PORN WEB VISITS

A retired police captain's visits to adult Internet sites while still working for the Orrville Police Captain has landed him a $500 fine and fifty hours of community service.

The Akron (OH) Beacon Journal says Steven Magier also received a year's probation on two counts of attempted unauthorized computer or telecommunications equipment use, first-degree misdemeanors. He could have received six months in jail on each count and $1,000 fines for likewise, the paper says.

Magier logged onto two Internet porn sites in August and September 1998. A city computer showed he logged in but could not show whether he'd paid to be there.

Wayne County Court Judge Robert J. Brown said he'd consider an early probation release for the 49-year-old former police officer if he paid the $500 and finished community service, adding the 27-year police veteran didn't merit jail based on the facts in the investigation.

Magier had been indicted on ten felony counts of unauthorized computer equipment use, one count of theft in office, and one count of evidence tampering, following a six-month probe by the Wayne County Sheriff and county prosecutor. He pleaded guilty in September to the misdemeanors after his attorney struck a plea bargain, the Beacon Journal says.

The paper also says Orrville's police chief at the time, James Zindroski, was charged in April with obstructing official business, an alleged coverup of Magier's activities, but no evidence was found to prosecute. Zindroski has since resigned and left the city.
