THE NETHERLANDS—Boo to you, Activision, maker of video games that feature mega-violence and mayhem. Why did you have to go and disinvite Dutch porn star Kim Holland from the VIP party being thrown in her native country by Dutch television program Gamekings to celebrate the Nov. 8 launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3?
Holland wasn’t invited just because she’s a Dutch porn star, but also because she’s an avid gamer. Do you realize how excited she was to have been invited, and how much she was looking forward to getting the free copy of the game and the new Xbox 360 being given to all the guests? Couldn't you at least have had the class to send the gifts to her, anyway?
What is especially creepy about your lily-livered decision is the fact that you didn’t do the dirty deed yourself, but made Gamekings do it after they’d invited her in the first place! You probably thought that was the fair thing to do, but you are wrong. You actually come across like a big corporate bully and a hypocrite, to boot.
Kim nailed you. “People murdering people is neat," she wrote on her blog after receiving the news, “but love-makers are dirty?”
In a news report revealing the cowardly act, another quote from Kim’s blog suggested that other similarly employed girls may have been told not to show. If that’s true, what exactly is the problem?
Are you worried about being lumped in with porn? Are you concerned that your blood-laden shoot-’em-ups might get some greater scrutiny from social conservatives if someone learns that a—gasp—porn star nerd attended a VIP party in The Netherlands?
You can’t really be that skittish, can you?
[Pause]
Of course you can! You’re a big company with 2010 net revenues in the order of $4.8 billion! It goes without saying you don't have the balls God gave a mouse.
