Does Porno Mean Doom for Kevin Smith?

MONROEVILLE, Pa. — An article just published by USA Today broaches the issue of whether the title of Kevin Smith's now-in-production comedy Zack & Miri Make a Porno might be box office poison for the film.

Though Smith concedes in the article that the word "porno" could cause some to steer clear of the movie, he notes, "We're just hoping that by the time the movie comes out, if the marketing people do their jobs right, it's a word that people will kind of get over."

On the other hand, the title could potentially be a boon for Smith and company. Industry analyst Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations said, "It's one of the best titles of the year. It sells the film for exactly what it is. ... I don't think anything is too risqué for Kevin Smith fans."

Zack & Miri Make a Porno tells the tale of two down-and-out friends, played by Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, who decide to make their own porn movie to pay off their debts, and fall for each other in the process.
