Director F.J. Lincoln: A Top Gun for Hire

There’s a top gun on the loose and primed for action — a seasoned shooter who can turn out top-selling, often award-worthy product on time, on budget and with a smile.

F.J. Lincoln, probably the most experienced adult movie director still behind a camera, is available for hire. He spent the last eight years turning out product for VCA, but then, he told AVN.com, “Larry Flynt took over. There isn’t one person in the entire company that was there three months ago.”

Lincoln, an AVN and XRCO Hall of Famer, started in porn around the time Deep Throat premiered. “33 fucking years I been doing this,” he said with his familiar hoarse laugh, part bark, part guffaw. Now, VCA’s restructuring has left him professionally unattached.

“I can edit, I can shoot, I can do features, I can do gonzo. Anything that they want, I’ve done it. I’m capable of doing whatever’s necessary.”

Lincoln estimates that at his peak he directed between 15 and 18 pictures a year for VCA. “To save them money I would do like three at a time,” he said. “And not one-day movies. Instead of taking two days for each one of them, we would do three in five days. Or we would do two in three days. Not huge budgets, but decent budgets. I did some nice stuff.”

One of his most recent productions, the wall to wall 18 and Easy was nominated for Best All Sex Release at this year’s AVN Awards.

“Now remember, too,” he added, “that I also worked for Caballero, I’ve worked for Wicked, for Vivid, Sin City, Metro. I was also working for Coastline, shooting stuff that they were doing for Spice. I’ve worked for a lot of companies. I also did a whole bunch of 35mm features. That was when we made movies. But I can do wall to wall stuff.”

Among his other VCA titles are Girl Next Door, Chasing Chloe, Love Is War, What Girls Like, Maya’s Addiction, Amber’s Pursuit.

Lincoln pointed out that he’s used to working within well-defined limits. “Remember, Russell [Hampshire, former VCA owner] kind of tied us as to what we could do. He had rules and you had to abide by those rules or you didn’t work. I can abide by the rules anybody gives me. Y’know, you’re the boss.

“To be really honest, as soon as I started doing video instead of film, I kind of lost my ego.” Another barking laugh. “’Cause I was a fuckin’ tyrant when we did films. But that was because I was really good at what I did. We went into theaters and I made money for them.”

His video productions also brought in bucks for their owners. A very short list includes Taboo 10 & 11, The Goddaughter 1-4, Where the Boys Aren’t 10, The Other Side of Serenity, Her Wicked Obsession, The Barlow Affair, Teri Weigel: Centerfold, and many dozens more.
