Digital Playground Launches 'Pirates II' Contest for Retailers

VAN NUYS, Calif. - Digital Playground is offering retailers over $20,000 in cash and prizes in a worldwide contest to promote its blockbuster sequel Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge.

The contest allows fans to vote for the most unique and dynamic in-store displays. The grand prize is $10,000, second prize is $5,000, and third prize is $2,500. The remaining winners ranked in the top 50 entries will receive signed copies of the movie on Blu-ray and DVD and signed posters.

The studio was successful with a similar promotion in July 2006 designed to move copies of the original Pirates during the theatrical release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Ambitious retailers built miniature ships, islands, and taverns in their stores to draw customer attention to the title.

"After we built the pirate ship in our Orlando store, monthly ‘Pirates' movies sales doubled," said Fairvilla MegaStores CEO Tom Berger. "Fairvilla MegaStore, Key West, which has a greater diversity in merchandise and higher ‘browsing' traffic, sold 300 percent more Pirates DVDs during July than in any previous month. In addition to increased revenue, the contest provided excitement and focus in our stores."

Digital Playground expects the Stagnetti's Revenge contest to be even bigger than the first.

"We are expecting more than 10 times the number of applicants, so stores are really going to have to work harder this time," said Digital Playground CEO Samantha Lewis. "We are giving away 50 fabulous prizes. Of course, with the amount of attention the stores get for participating, everyone comes out for the better."

Stores can now visit the contest homepage and click on "Admin" to upload photos for use in the contest, which ends at 11:59 p.m. (PTS) on Dec. 31.
