Daniel Black, a veteran mainstream photographer, has shifted his focus to the adult industry beginning with a recent promotional shoot with Jill Kelly Productions contract stars Jenna Haze and Tyra Banxxx.
The Los Angeles native has 20 years of experience in fashion, celebrity and various types of entertainment photography. Black’s image of Banxxx will be used as the box cover of her next DVD and in a new print advertisement.
“The climate of publishing is it’s all about how sexy can you get without going too far, and it’s always been really kind of a frustration, just creeping along the edge and never really taking it as far as it can go,” Black, who is using a different surname for adult, said. “This is a great opportunity to go all the way and push the limits on all different levels of adult film and photography.”
Black said he admired the work of directors such as Andrew Blake and Michael Ninn.
“I guess I was just born a pornographer and never did it,” he said. “I think I can do it as good if not better than any of the people shooting the best stuff.”
Black has shot several album covers for record labels such as Warner Bros., Atlantic, Verve and Motown and his work has been published in Movieline, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair, among other magazines. He said he previously photographed current Vivid Girl Tera Patrick for her California Exotic Novelties toy line in addition to other promotional pictures. While he is getting his start with JKP, Black indicated he would like to branch out and work for other companies as well.
“I’m interested in directing. I want to make that switch as soon as possible,” he said.
JKP public relations director Scott Hoover said, "Daniel has a unique ability to capture the essence of his subject that really comes across in his imagery. He has done some fantastic images for us. Now I am sure everyone else will snap him up, but at least I can say that we were his first. We broke him in."
