VENICE, Calif.—Dana Vespoli is currently finishing work on Hollywood Babylon, the biggest feature of her career to date. Notably, the movie stars Sovereign Syre (pictured) in her first four boy/girl scenes, and also features Dana DeArmond, Valentina Nappi, Steven St. Croix, James Deen, Ramon Nomar, Ryan Driller, Michael Vegas and JM Darling. It will be released April 30.
“It was a tremendous honor to shoot Sovereign's first boy/girl scenes, as well as direct her in the lead acting role,” said Vespoli. “She is an amazing actress, so it made sense to showcase her acting ability as well as her powerhouse sexual skills in a feature rather than a wall-to-wall showcase.
“This movie is a love letter to this town,” she added, “and to all the hopes, dreams, majesty and horror held within its palm tree-lined celluloid, stucco walls and our collective subconscious.”
Syre and Vespoli have worked together several times and the former also starred in Dana’s lesbian feature, She’s Come Undone.
“It was immediately clear to me that she has an extraordinary depth and presence,” said Vespoli. “Sovereign has a lot to offer as a performer—she is a captivating beauty, no doubt, but she is most interesting to me when she is bringing a character to life. She is whip smart, has a great deal of empathy, and fearlessly commits to whatever role you give to her.”
The jump to boy/girl scenes was something Syre had been anticipating for nearly a year and she said she wouldn’t have put her debut into the hands of anyone else. “Over that past two years Dana and I have worked together on several projects, so it seemed only natural when I was ready to crossover that I would go to her first,” Syre said. “I feel blessed to have forged a creative bond with someone as talented and determined as Dana; her features for Evil Angel, her darkly erotic fantasy life, have long captured my own imagination and making this movie gave me the opportunity to finally be a part of her vision. I can't think of a bigger honor as a performer than to have a director write an entire movie around you and to trust you with not one, but five scenes.
“Working with James Deen was better than I could have ever hoped for,” she continued. “I wanted something special for my first time and James was keen to really push things as far as I wanted to go. Steven St. Croix is one of the best actors working in adult today, he has such gravity and swagger, the movie wouldn't be the same with anyone else. Dana and I both wanted something that would stand on its own, with or without the cache of containing my first b/g scenes; we both thought that would be the best showcase for me as a performer and for her as a director and I think that's what we accomplished with Hollywood Babylon. I'm very proud of this project and happy to have crossed over into a new genre. I hope to continue to have intense, amazing experiences and to share them with a whole new audience.”
Dana has already established herself as one of the best directors working in the industry today, receiving consistently positive responses from both fans and critics, strong sales and awards recognition. Those who have seen early edits of Hollywood Babylon are saying this could be the best of her career so far.
James Deen commented, "It is always an honor to be involved in any Dana Vespoli masterpiece. Her vision and skills are those of an incomparable variety."
Dana Vespoli is nominated for Best Director (Non-Features) at the 2014 XRCO Awards. The show will be held April 16 at OHM nightclub at the Hollywood & Highland complex in Hollywood. For more information, go here.
