'DVD Jon' Off The Hook

The computer programming teenager known as DVD Jon has been acquitted of theft for developing a program to copy DVD films. Such programs have been outlawed in the United States.

Jon Johansen admitted copying only DVDs he bought legally by using his program, and the Oslo court has ruled he was entitled under law to copy material he himself paid for. Hollywood studios are said to be appealing the ruling.

"The appeals court has decided to bring up the case again," said Johansen's attorney, Halvor Manshaus, to ZDNet.com, which reports the appeals court screens cases before deciding to hear them. Johansen's new trial is due to begin in the Fall, according to ZDNet.
