DJ Yella, a founding member of legendary rap posse N.W.A., has joined forces with Darkside Entertainment owner Nicky Starks for DJ Yella’s West Side Stories. Yella is director, Starks executive producer.
The former rapper has been involved in the adult industry for several years with DJ Yella Entertainment, which had a distribution deal with Sunshine Films. This is his first venture with Darkside.
According to general manager Fred Wilson, the DJ Yella name and its mainstream associations has triggered a larger than usual response from distributors. Sales rep Hank Weinstein has termed the pre-orders “nothing short of phenomenal.”

“From the response we’ve been getting we’re wondering if we actually ordered enough,” Wilson said. “We may have to consider a second run before it even hits the streets.” Street date is February 10.
Darkside is planning a followup series, DJ Yella’s Straight Outta Compton. (Both titles reference classic N.W.A. albums.) Wilson said location shooting was actually done in Compton.
