Coffee, Tea, or Ryan Driller? On 'The J.O.B.' With Wicked

Adult movie shoots can take place anywhere. At private homes—lots of private homes—in dedicated location houses, beside backyard pools, inside moving vehicles, at rural swingers' resorts, in an occasional isolated public park, and sometimes, sometimes, in a real professional studio in a full-sized mock-up of a jumbo jet cabin.

This is where Brad Armstrong is shooting The J.O.B. for Wicked Pictures, a contemporary story of a reporter (played by Jessica Drake) following porn star Asa Akira (played by Asa Akira) who has written a best-selling book. The script draws in current-events references like the Porter Ranch gas leak; the water crisis in Flint, Michigan; and the ongoing presidential race. The titular J.O.B. is a satirical description of porn: "Jerking Off Boys."

"It's an awesomely put-together script," Drake says. "My reporter character is a little naïve and she doesn't have a great understanding of what porn is. I'm invited to a set, I meet Asa, I talk to her, I watch her work, I interview her, and she takes me through her life. Some things happen and there's some sex, and then there's sex, and then some more sex," she adds with a laugh.

Akira is tasked with playing porn star Asa Akira, which isn't as easy as it sounds.

"It's hard to play yourself, I think," Akira says. "Now I have to act natural, which is really hard to do when people tell you to do it. Jessica is playing a reporter named Zoë, and she comes to interview me about my book—which is really my book—and I essentially turn her and pull her in to the dark side. She doesn't quite do porn, but I think I open her up a little bit, sexually. In the scene we're about to shoot, she's playing an extra. I convinced her to be an extra in it. And then—she has a little bit of fun on her own with my male co-star. Off camera. On camera. Very meta. Brad is playing the director in the movie—and he's also directing the movie."

Armstrong's acting role as the director of the fake film has already caused some confusion, according to Akira: "Yesterday, Brad kept yelling things during the four-way scene and we were, like, 'Wait. Is that real direction? Are we really cutting or fake-cutting?'"

As the scene gets ready to start, Armstrong ambles in and casually asks "Everybody ready? Everybody know their lines? Any questions?" and gets nods and mumbles of assent before he points out that's his line at the top of the scene. The run-through of the lines redoubles the confusion as Drake, dressed as a flight attendant for the extra part in the fake movie, asks Armstrong, "Am I mad about what she's doing, or am I disgusted, or am I turned on?" which sounds like a real question until Armstrong responds "Aren't you cute. This is porno. The hot flight attendant is always feigning disgust yet is inwardly turned on. That's the way it works." When Drake stutters out "G-got it." it becomes clear that that's the dialogue.

As the scene begins, Asa sets up Zoë to get kissed by Ryan Driller, leading the reporter character to exclaim "I can't do this!" and Driller to respond "It's okay. They told me you were tested," starting the seduction of Zoë's character. To further cement the foreshadowing, Asa looks directly at Jessica's ass as she walks away.

The sex scene begins, shooting hard and soft angles simultaneously. Cameraman Alex Ladd squats in the aisle, framing his shot on Asa and Driller kissing, as somebody walks past the set, casting a shadow on the frosted window. "We're rolling! Cross behind the lights!"
