China "Urges" Search Engines: Punt the Porn

Releasing what it's calling a "self-discipline" pact for Chinese search engine providers, a government-run industry group has a message for the engines: punt the porn.

The new "self discipline" regulation from the Internet Society of China bans Chinese search engines from gathering, disseminating, or linking to porn or "illegal or inappropriate" Web sites, according to the state-run news agency Xinhua.

"The ISC should make sure that the self-discipline pact is well implemented to further crack down on Chinese Web porn and promote a healthy environment on the Internet", Cai Ming, deputy director of the State Council Information Office, told Xinhua.

The ISC reported earlier this week that China has shut down 1,129 porn sites since the Communist government launched a major crackdown on porn and other "inappropriate" Web content in late June and early July.
