COULD A PORNOGRAPHIC LIAISON WIN VENICE PRIZE

A little known Belgian director's little film has Italian critics thinking it could take the top Venice Film Festival prize. \nNathalie Baye

A Pornographic Liaison nailed down ten minutes of applause at its Saturday premiere at the film festival, with critics saying that response eclipsed the response to Australian director Jane Campion's (The Piano) new film, Holy Smoke.

The film stars French actress Nathalie Baye as part of a nameless couple who meet weekly in a hotel to actualize a mutual erotic fantasy. The film was directed by 31-year-old Belgian Frederic Fonteyne. The Associated Press says of the film that the viewer never sees beyond the closed door of their hotel room, with the precise nature of their fantasy a mystery.

The Venice Film Festival closes Saturday with a special lifetime achievement award for comedian/director Jerry Lewis.
