CONFERENCE AIMS GUNS AT CHILD PORN

They're out to contain and perhaps eliminate the explosion of child porn online. About 250 American and European experts gather here Wednesday to discuss how to do that, says Nando Media.

They include police, researchers, computer experts, and children's rights advocates for the three-day conference aiming to build a joint international approach to fighting child sex on the Web.

"It is vital for the United States and the European Union to join forces to fight crimes which have increased considerably in recent years, since most Internet users and providers are in the U.S. and Europe," the organizers say.

The Europeans especially are cracking down on online porn, with three arrested in Austria recently and Spanish police seizing a Web page designer whose site took 700,000 hits in five months. Austria's junior foreign minister, Franz Cede, says the problem is worldwide and cannot bear only a national solution.
