CHURCH UPHOLDS HOMOSEXUAL "HOLY UNIONS"

The Presbyterian Church has all but upheld same-sex "holy unions" in a case involving a church ceremony here.

A regional governing synod, one step below the General Assembly, ruled Monday that a same-sex holy union is acceptable within the Presbyterian Church because it is not quite the same as a full marriage ceremony and thus allowable under church law.

The synod has also ruled a homosexual may continue his candidacy for the Presbyterian ministry, even though he has said he intends to continue having sexual relationships. But he has not said whether he intends to fulfill ordination, though the Presbyterians accept homosexual ministers if they vow to remain celibate.
