Bush Defends Supreme Court Nominee

President Bush defended White House counsel Harriet Miers, his nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, during a press conference Tuesday.

Among other things, Bush said that Miers shared his judicial philosophy.

"I don't want someone to go on the bench to try to supplant the legislative process," Bush said. "I'm interested in people that will be strict constructionists, and Harriet Miers shares that philosophy."

He also said he picked Miers because of her strength of character and was assured that her legal philosophy would not change, CNN reported.

"I've known her for more than 10 years," Bush said. "I know her character. She's a woman of principle and deep conviction."

CNN reported that Miers on Monday paid courtesy calls to senators who will decide her confirmation, while her lack of experience as a judge prompted a cautious reaction from conservatives and liberals.
