Black Market Launches Gonzo Company

Black Market, a new ethnic-themed, gonzo company, will ship its third release, Womenopoly, on Monday for a Nov. 6 street date. Womenopoly, which is directed by Phashon, follows the company’s first two releases — What’s Crackin??? and The Adventures of Shorty Mac — which will both hit streets early next week.

“We’ve already had a really great response from retailers about the first two titles,” company co-owner James Melendy told AVN.com. “Phashon did a great job, and we’ve had a good flow with him. The talent have been great as well…we’ve enjoyed working with them and they’ve enjoyed working with us.”

Melendy said that he and his wife Jodi, who is head of production for the new company, will concern themselves with providing authenticity to customers. “A very wise man once told me that ‘he who has the best product, wins.’”

Both James and Jodi were previously in sales and production, respectively, at Anarchy Films, but have since left the company to start Black Market. James said that the company looks to release one title a week up until the end of the year. “At that point, we’ll take a look back…and decide on a new releasing schedule,” he said. Black Market will distribute all of its own product, along with that of independent producers, Female Factory and It’s About Time.

“Ninety-five percent of our stuff will be shot in HD,” James continued. “We’re trying to provide the best product we can for our customers, because in the end, it’s all in the product.”

James went on to say that the company has also been trying to integrate rap culture with their releases. “We hooked up with both On One Entertainment and Noddock Music to provide original music for all of our titles.” James said the company is hoping to include soundtracks with each of its releases, starting in December.

“We’ve also been in talks with some pretty big-named music producers, and we’ll be announcing those in the future…this kind of product goes hand in hand with rap music.”

James said that Black Market will be working with a varied group of directors; from Phashon to Tim Von Swine (who helmed The Adventures of Shorty Mac) to new lensmen that the company will be introducing, like Ricky D.
