Biggest Child Porn Case In Net History? Yes: Sweden

Norway's national crime investigation bureau, Kripos, has just landed a child porn bust in which over forty young girls were said to be victims, and neighboring Sweden is crediting Kripos with one of the biggest child porn cases in the history of the Internet.

"In recent years there have been many child porn cases involving the Internet, but this has dimensions that make it unique," said Per-Olov Forslund, who runs Sweden's national police child porn fighting squad, to the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten."We believe that over 40 young girls may have been abused and photographed. There are many indications that this is the most significant case of this type in the world."

Kripos, however, is being modest about its role. "There is no hocus-pocus involved in what we have done," said superintendent H?vard Aksnes to the newspaper. "Even if much of the investigation has taken place on the Internet, we haven't done anything other than good old-fashioned police work."

A 41-year-old Swede is in custody on suspicion of abusing children in south Stockholm's Huddinge district, accused of photographing and filming his assaults to send to pedophiles around the world by way of the Internet, Aftenposten said. Police in Sweden and Norway alike are convinced a Norwegian arrested in Fredrikstad May 13 is connected to the Swede, the newspaper added.

Kripos worked for two years on this case, tracing details involving "a recurring series of children pictured in pornographic images," Aftenposten said, adding that Interpol noticed the pattern and believed the children were northern Europeans. Kripos used both their own investigation and "two handy tips" before delivering the main suspect to Swedish authorities, the paper added.
