Baltimore’s RSK Distributes Amateur Line from Boston

Boston Baby Dolls, an amateur series, is the first product line from RSK Distributors, the Baltimore-based wholesaler owned by Russ Katz.

Shot by John Ferguson of Boston Alternative Media, a publisher who moonlights in video, it features true amateur girls from the New England area.

Katz met Ferguson at the Adult Entertainment Expo in January. He was looking to pick up some lines for exclusive distribution —“something a little unique and different”—and Boston Baby Dolls filled the bill. The two got the deal up and running about four months ago. Two volumes are now available.

“Initially,” Katz told AVN.com, “I was going to try to distribute them on my own, as something unique to RSK. But I don’t think we’re able to move enough pieces alone. We need to open this up and sell them to any distributors that we can. We’re in the process right now of calling other distributors and letting them know it’s available for them as well.”

Katz is confident that the line will fill an open niche in the porn market. “There are so few companies putting out good amateur product,” he said. “And there’s very little product being made with East Coast girls on the East Coast. It really is something that’s not available anywhere right now at all.”

There are ten full movies in the can, most with four scenes, all two hours long. Vol. 3 will go out within a few weeks.

Ferguson has been a publisher of adult newspapers and magazines in New England since 1996. Boston Alternative Media prints 25,000 copies a month of the XXX sexpaper Private Games. “Every adult store in New England carries them,” he says.

He started shooting sex scenes two years ago, as a “natural progression” from shooting stills for his publications. He said he tried to “do as close to real as I could. But also use two, three cameras, edit it, make it look clean.”

“In some ways it’s an amateur product,” Katz concurred, “but the way it’s shot, it looks more professionally done.”

As with many producers, Ferguson’s problem was distribution. That’s where Katz came into the picture. “John made the movies but he didn’t know what to do with them,” Katz said. “He was going around selling to the local stores in Massachusetts, and that’s not really the main part of his business.”

Ferguson recruits talent primarily through ads he runs in his papers. Most of the women he shoots (plus the occasional couple) are first and only timers. “It’s basically swinger sex,” he said. “Everybody’s doing the things they want to do.”

“He really does try to let the people have fun,” Katz added.

All the talent is sent out for HIV testing, and there is also a condom use policy except for longtime off-screen couples. Ferguson’s mostly New England women are a breed apart from the California girls who rule in most porn.

“The girls sound different, they’re a little edgier, a little less sunny,” he said. “It’s not better, it’s just different. That’s why I branded it so hard to the East Coast by calling it ‘Boston’ Baby Dolls.

“I want to shoot real amateurs, not a girl who’s done 30 films and is calling herself an amateur. These girls, you’re not going to see ‘em a lot. They’re going to come in here and shoot and that’s that.”

A rare exception is Queeny, who’s on the cover of Vol. 2. After debuting in Boston she moved on to L. A., where she worked most notably with Rodney Moore. She was with Katz and Ferguson at their Erotica LA booth and has become the spokesmodel for the Baby Dolls line.

Ferguson is sure he made the right distribution choice with Katz. “Russ is a great guy,” he said. “I’m really glad I hooked up with him.” He’s looking forward to possibly shooting a Baltimore Baby Dolls sometime in the future.
