Reuters reports that porn retailer AdultShop, which maintains 28 stores across Australia and New Zealand, has filed a motion with the Federal Court asking that the X rating for motion pictures be repealed.
AdultShop is basing its request on the proposition that community standards have changed since the guidelines for movie ratings were formulated in 1984. Said company CEO Malcolm Day, "The Office of Film and Literature Classification is required to take into account current community standards in relation to explicit erotic films."
The company's case is buffered by the facts that the majority of Australian adults do not find explicit movies offensive, according to an ACNielsen survey conducted last September, and the current restrictions on the sale of X-rated fare have fostered an out-of-control black market for pirated material.
