Assemblywoman Garcia Blocks Porn Loophole

Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia (R-Cathedral City) introduced Assembly Bill 546 to stop state employees from knowingly using state-owned or state-leased computers to access, view, download, or otherwise obtain pornographic material online.

As initially drafted, the ban would have applied to approximately 200,000 state employees…but not the legislative branch.

Garcia, who once saucily informed her colleagues on the assembly floor that “I have an extra pair of underwear in my drawer,” would have been exempt from the porn ban, along with her 119 legislative colleagues and about 2,200 workers.

However, once the loophole was identified by the Assembly Business and Professions Committee, Garcia moved quickly to amend her bill in order to close it.

“I think it [the porn ban] should apply to all of us,” she said. “Why should we have a set of standards for one group and not the other?”
