Apple Launches “World’s Thinnest Desktop”

Apple has unwrapped its new iMac desktop following a two-month delay, at a company expo here.

“Now,” head of worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller said in a keynote address, “we have the world’s thinnest desktop computer.”

If you thought the incumbent iMac – whose minimalist design with thin display on a small steel pole mounted to a hemispheric base dropped jaws when it premiered a few years ago – was a sight, you’ll be thrilled by the new model: integrating disk drives and processors into a flat display thinner than two inches.

The new iMac will come in 17-inch and 20-inch displays with wireless keyboard and mouse, and retail prices are expected to be $1,299 for the 17-inch model and $1,899 for the slightly-thicker 20-inch model, Apple said. “This,” Schiller told the Apple Expo, “is a much more affordable line.”

Apple had originally expected a delayed launch for the new iMac, saying last month they’d push it back to September, but that nipped at the company share price. The company has not yet disclosed any sales targets for the new iMac.
