Adult Novelty Sales Lead to Obscenity Bust in Louisiana

The owner of a video store and one of his employees were arrested last week for allegedly selling adult novelties that were deemed obscene by a district judge.

Marvin Ray, proprietor of the Grabault Video Store, and Michelle A. Brewster, an employee, were arrested last Thursday when deputies with the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office served a warrant issued on the basis of novelties purchased by undercover detectives.

Lt. Keith Robertson, who was not present when the warrant was served, told AVN.com that adult novelties and adult videos were being sold from a back room of the video store.

“I understand that there was any size, shape or color that you’d want as far as vibrators, dildos and such go,” Robertson said.

While the current obscenity charges stem from novelties, the adult videos seized will likely be reviewed for additional obscenity charges.

Ray, 69, pled guilty in 1993 to two charges of indecent behavior with a juvenile. As of this morning, he was still being held on $10,000 bail at the Morehouse Parish jail. Brewster, 39, a sales clerk at the video store, has been released on bail.

Fourth District Attorney Jerry Jones told The Bastrop Daily Enterprise that he intended to prosecute Ray to the fullest extent of the law.

"State law is very clear about what constitutes obscene material," Jones said. "There is no question the merchandise seized yesterday meets those requirements."

The pertinent Louisiana law designates an obscene device as one that is “designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs.”
