AVN.COM BUSINESS PROFILE - DVSX: Four Simple Letters, One Simple Goal

What the hell is a DVSX? you may have asked yourself at some point — if, of course, you happen to be a porn watcher and happen to have come across one of the many porn boxes bearing those particular letters.

All you have to do is think about it a second, guys and gals; sound it out in your head, and you’ll discover the answer: DeViouS X. Or DeVious SeX, whichever strikes your fancy. Pretty clever, huh? (All right, so we didn’t get it. We’re slow. Let’s move on.)

Started in October 2002, by industry vets Alex Ladd and Javier C, DVSX is a porn company that’s strived for one thing and one thing only from the get-go: making good porn.

“It’s a simple story of two guys putting their money where their mouth is,” Ladd, the company’s head of production, told AVN. “Javier and I just got tired of working hard to make others rich and having all these great ideas that kept getting rejected. We wanted to have a company that felt like a family, like you were part of something, and where everyone’s opinion matters.”

With Ladd’s 15 years of production experience, and Javier’s 17 years of doing everything in the business from warehouse duties to sales, the two knew they had their bases covered, and so they forged ahead with their plan; all they needed was a name.

“The name came about when we were searching for something that wasn’t screaming ‘porno’ and was short enough to make a good URL. Kind of subtle yet blatant, rolls off the tongue, and a bit of a throwback to the alphabet companies of yesteryear.”

Ladd naturally took the reigns of the production end, drawing on what he’d learned from all those years of sitting around on sets. As he explained, “On set, you have a lot of down time, so I would ask a lot of questions on how things were done, whether it was lighting, producing or shooting.”

In his creation of DVSX’s various lines, Ladd began to cultivate somewhat of a specialty in ethnic/hard-edged fare — with some of his most successful lines being the AVN Awards-nominated Sakura Tales, Gothsend and Grudgefuck — which he differentiates from other porn-makers’ product of similar ilk by virtue of his vids’ focus on appreciativeness and respect.

“I personally love the ethnic lines,” he asserted, “and the reason I think we’ve done so well with them is because we don’t stereotype. The movies are about the appreciation of the cultures and not exploitation. The hard-edge lines are not violent, they are aggressive. The difference between ours and others’ is that any loser can be aggressive with his hands and fist, but only true studs can do it with their dick.”

With that being said, can we ever expect to see a girl/girl line from DVSX? “We shoot girl/girl scenes from time to time, but only when the girls are good and into it. We don’t want ‘gay for pay’ girl/girl scenes, and we don’t feel that there are enough convincing lesbians out there to fill a good series.”

What about features? “Yawn!” Ladd replied. Guess that settles that.

One thing he is excited about, however, is the directorial debut of Mofo, the creator of the porn-tied clothing line Mofowear, titled Sick Girls Need Sick Boys (released through DVSX in December).

“Mofo and DVSX have been involved on a personal level for a few years, and we knew that he had directed a few music vids and knows almost everyone in the biz. It just made sense to get him on board. I [thought] Sick Girls Need Sick Boys was the best debut that I have ever seen from a newcomer.”

As far as future plans are concerned, Ladd said the company’s main focus is expanding into different territories and pursuing a variety of Internet ventures. But in general, the plan is to stick to what they know best, which, as Ladd put it, is “good sex, period. All the lighting, dialogue and any other nonsense is completely useless in the porn genre if the sex is put on the back burner.”
