ASACP and DCIA Combat P2P CP

The Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection (ASACP) and Distributed Computing Industry Association (DCIA) have announced a joint initiative to combat child pornography on P2P networks by providing a child protection hotline for the DCIA-sponsored P2P PATROL (Peer-to-Peer Parents And Teens React On Line).

“ASACP knows that there are more distribution methods for illegal images on the Internet than just websites,” says Joan Irvine, ASACP executive director. “We felt it was important to help other associations and industries to combat child pornography by sharing our recently developed technology platforms. This saved DCIA years of development and provided an immediate method for P2P customers to report suspect child pornography.”

P2P users can now educate themselves and report child pornography via the website CPHotline.org.

The initiative was developed through the collaborative effort of Cydata Services president Brandon Shalton and RazorPop CEO Marc Freedman.

“CPHotline.org will be a valuable tool complimenting P2P PATROL in helping consumers who inadvertently encounter undesirable material to recognize, remove, and report it,” says DCIA CEO Marty Lafferty.

This is the ASACP’s first collaborative venture with a nonadult trade group, but won’t be the last. The organization plans to work with the mobile phone industry to set up something similar, Irvine says.

The DCIA is a voluntary organization representing the distributed computing industry, including content providers, software developers and distributors, and service-and-support companies.
