"With 1st Strike, we're going to be able to cross over and cater more to the inner city crowd, a more urban feel," explained Nectar CEO Sean Logan.
From the Brothers Blatt — the family brain trust behind Antigua Pictures — comes two exciting new offerings. In the animation realm, we have Sweet Cheeks.Sure, it’s a cartoon, but Bugs Bunny it ain’t. The offering is a XXX trip into the nasty urban world of ani-rap, an American answer to the Japanese hardcore hentai fare. Damaged Productions has stormed onto the market this year with entries in several genres including gonzo, wall-to-wall, feature and specialty. The company launched in February with Anal Hazard, and has released John T. Bone’s Tabu and Latin Motherfuckers, Triple Hexxx, Asian Desires, Gold Label, Silver Label, Training Day, the all-girl Pussy Play 1-3, Oral Intake 1-2, the high-definition Survival Sluts and The Art of Sex. "There's all different types of customers out there, and we want to appease every type," states Lewis Adams, vice president of sales. Co-owner Blaine Hensley says he was a student of the former VCA Pictures chief executive. “I’ve been in the industry a long time. If you make a good quality product at a good price, your customers will support you.” Upcoming Damaged product includes Asian Thighs, Cream Pies and Interracially Damaged.
High-end gonzo start-up Defiance Films has pledged to shoot everything in High Definition, starting with Pleasure, an all-sex movie featuring three boy/girl anal scenes and an all-girl anal fourway. That’s to be followed by the interracial Slick Chicks, Black Dicks,directed by actress Shy Love. Two more niche titles follow in July: Teen Dreaming and Deviant Tits. Sales and Marketing Director Anthony Simone has a solid industry background, including two years at Metro. And HD technologies specialist Norman Bentley had a hand in the creation of Matrix Content. So look for some Matrix titles from Defiance, too.
It’s rare for a company’s first release to reach the promised land of an Editor’s Choice, but Harmony’s Cabaret Bizarre, a hot, stylish fetish/hardcore hybrid, did just that back in March. Hopefully, it’s a sign of good things to cum from the British-based production house that’s distributed here in the states exclusively by Evil Angel. “This is crazy hard stuff from the real London fetish underground,” raves EA owner John Stagliano. “I love this movie!” Besides such BDSM-flavored works as Cabaret Bizarre and Hotel Hyde (both directed by the AVN Award-winning Tanya Hyde), Harmony is producing straight-ahead hardcore titles including Belladonna’s Fuck Me and Slam It in Harder.
Earlier this year New Sensations launched Hot Boxxx, a label dedicated to fusing porn and music, with each release containing a bonus CD featuring up-and-coming bands. The company debuted with Bottom’s Up, which featured the Hiwatts, a band fronted by former Candlebox lead singer Kevin Martin. In May, the company took things a step further, releasing Axel Braun’s Internal Revenues, which replaced all the performers’ sex sounds with music by DJ Alex DeLarge. “This gives [artists] another avenue for exposure and adds significant value to our products,” New Sensations president Scott Taylor said.
Lava Releasing is merging with and absorbing Phoenix Releasing. It will do “the same thing Phoenix does, but on a greater scale,” according to Phoenix owner Bob East, a partner in Lava. That is, it will represent producers: “About a 50-50 mix of represented product and product that is produced specifically for us.” The latter comes from Miami-based Slave 2 Lust, a high-end gonzo company, and Frenzy, its even bigger-budget feature label. Also under the Lava umbrella are Nicholas Steele Productions and such former Phoenix producers as Ghost Pro, Mr. X Productions, Shane, Dave Pounder and the Heidi Fleiss series.
After several companies approached them to help sell their products, veteran salesman Vince Miller got together with somewhat-less-veteran actress Rebecca Bardoux to form a marketing/P.R. firm based in Canoga Park which, Bare Inc. "Vince and I hit it off just fantastically," said Bardoux, "so we decided to form a sort of brokerage where we would help companies with both sales and promotion, so they don't have to try to do it all in-house." Topping sales charts straight out of the gate, controversial director Khan Tusion’s new production company Pariah Pictures is making an early mark. Available through JM Productions, lines include the comic Frank Wank P.O.V., Meat Holes,the golden shower-themed Piss Mops and the sex with strangers gonzo series Midnight Prowl. Of his Prowl series, Tusion said, “It’s so easy to say what I do is terrible, and the reason is, I think, that we do different things. … We’re exploring real sexuality, and we’re exploring it both from the female perspective and from the male perspective. It’s an honest interaction, and you don’t see any honest interaction in porno. It doesn’t exist."
Pink Visuals, the DVD arm of Top Bucks, is based out of Tucson, Ariz., and has been established within adult since 1996. The company specializes in reality porn with series such as Her First Anal Sex, MILF Seeker, Boob Exam Scam, Gang Bang Squad, Teens for Cash and Backseat Bangers, which have been part of its popular online offering for over two years. The company made its first release on DVD in September 2004. Pink Visuals releases five new titles monthly, both straight and gay.
Gonzo powerhouse Red Light District Films, is getting into features, and owner David Joseph is doing it right, signing Hall of Fame director James Avalon to direct a series of high-end films. The first, James Avalon’s Dark Side, went before the Super 16 cameras in May, with Penny Flame in the leading role. Avalon says it’s a speculative erotic fantasy about a memory transplant that goes haywire. He has vowed to keep the sex hot and nasty “in the Red Light tradition.”
“Too hot for TV but not DVD” is the motto of Spice Studios. The label was created to re-purpose on video original broadcast content from the Playboy Entertainment-owned Spice Network — except with scenes too explicit to be shown on cable. Distributing it to stores is CinemaPlay Entertainment, which pioneered Web to store distribution with Adult.com. First up from Spice is Spice Hotel, a 3-DVD box set (including a High Definition disc for computer play) of scenes from the cable show helmed by AVN Hall of Famer Bud Lee. Spice Studios’ executive producer and marketing director is Bob Johnson, another industry vet.
Tera Patrick’s popularity continues to soar, making Tera Vision one of the hottest companies in adult. Tera-hubbie Evan Seinfeld says he sits “at the helm of SS Tera Mania. Most of my time is spent fielding offers for Tera, whether it be mainstream movies, appearances, mainstream magazines, adult magazines, things we can’t do because we’re in an exclusive contract, licensing, digital rights management, and then of course our agency.” Whew! Patrick herself says she will continue building The Tera Patrick Agency and do feature dancing, which has “turned into something I really love.” She is also launching two herbal products, Python for men and Naughty for women, writing a biography and penning a column for FHM in the U.K.
There’s nothing soft about Ultra Hard Films; the fledgling company came out strong with Searching for the Anal Queen, and has followed that with five other steamy hardcore offerings. “I went outside the business and got some investors who wanted to be in the business,” explains veteran shooter/producer Stefon Morris of UHF and tandem company Envy Pictures’ origins. “There are a lot of companies that spend a lot of time and money on the box, and when the consumer opens it up, there’s shit product inside. Our intent is to change that.” With a dozen films in the can, Ultra Hard/Envy is well on the way.
Created by industry sales veteran Dave Gallegos, gonzo start-up X-Worx hit the ground running with the all-sex X-Vision. Filling anal and all-girl niches, respectively, are Ass Fanatics and Muff, both helmed by Miles Long, a new director but a longtime regular on both sides of the camera. The stated X-Worx philosophy is, in part: “Bringing beautiful people together in the art of sexual imagery is worthy of pursuit.” Visually attractive, high-quality porn, from box cover to the movie inside, is X-Worx’ goal. In the Worx is a reality series about how porn girls live when they’re not on sets.
DIRECTORS
The credits of all of Marty Zion's features from Nectar Entertainment contained a name that's recently been promoted to the box cover itself: Eric Avalon. "Eric is now directing for Marty," says Sean Logan, Nectar CEO. "Eric was his assistant on all the Zion movies. Eric also is my VP of production and chief editor, so there isn't a Zion movie that's gone out the door without him being involved.” Fans can check out Avalon's first two Brazilian-themed releases, Exxxstasy Island and Sao Paolo Black & Brown Samba.
Otto Bauer is one of the most rock ‘em, sock ‘em (well, not literally, but almost) male performers on the scene today. And now he’s begun to bring his unique hyper-insensitivity to behind the camera, helming Triple Threat and Lips That Lie for his new Super Core line for start-up Mach II Productions, of which he is a partner. “I like to think of the girls as willing participants in their own annihilation,” Otto says, only partially kidding, and from what we witnessed on the Lips That Lie set, that sums up his directing style quite nicely thank you. All of the above-mentioned titles are slated to be unleashed on the world this month.
Following in the footsteps of her mother, AVN Hall of Famer Suze Randall,Holly Randall first established herself as a photographer (she shot the cover to this month’s AVN), and last year began directing, earning herself a 2005 AVN Awards Best Director nomination for Dark Side. She says what makes her titles stand out is “the attention to details like lighting, makeup and styling. We spend a lot of time developing sets and, of course, matching up performers correctly is very important.” Her most recent titles are Three’s Cumpany and Sinfully Sexy.
While AVN Award winning director David Stanley may not be the freshest daisy in the field, the fact that he jumped from Vivid to Wicked this year is a big deal indeed. In addition to his directorial talents, Stanley is one of porn’s best screenwriters. “I wanted to find a company that would take me to the next level, and I couldn’t think of a better one than Wicked Pictures,” he says. “They are so in line with what I want, which is to make movies that are about sex that [are] movies first.” Look for his first Wicked release, Polarities starring Nicole Sheridan, in the coming months.
Veteran videographer Chris Streams has come into his own as a director in the past year. He is extremely passionate about shooting, and it shows. “I’m a bit of a perfectionist,” he admits. Good thing for Third Degree Films, where Streams has helmed over 15 powerhouse titles in the past seven months in the U.S. and Prague. “He is the look and eye of our box covers,” says Third Degree President Joey Wilson. “He is a one-man band here: director, videographer and photographer. I think he is one of most talented guys in the industry. He has a truly perverted eye.” Streams’ titles include Crack Addict, Up’er clASS, Share the Load 1-2, Black Inside Me, Camelhoes 3 and About Face. While he is exclusive with Third Degree, he has also done some excellent work for Zero Tolerance, including Internal Cumbustion 4-7, Apple Bottoms and New Trix 1-2.
Martin Del Toro spent his first four years in the industry as a cameraman and editor, mentoring briefly under Jim Powers. “I learned so much from him,” Del Toro reverentially recalls, “like dealing with stupid crack whores.” Last year, he turned to directing and since then has helmed productions primarily for Vertigo, Colossal and Pearl, bringing an invigorated approach to such sub-genres as scum-sharing — Vertigo’s Gob Swappers (Spotlight Pick this issue) — and threesomes — Colossal’s 2 Chicks and a Cock. Del Toro describes his directing style as “crazy, hardcore, interactive, saliva on the lens, all kinds of fetishes, cum fetish, shoe fetish, feet fetish, pussy fetish, ass fetish. Though Jack the Zipper has but two releases, they speak volumes for his talent and artistic vision. FRESH LINES/TITLES
Evil Angel contract director Jonni Darkko took viewer involvement to a new level with his chick vs. chick battle Anal Showdown. Fans went to his Website, jonnidarkkoxxx.com, to cast their ballots. “It’s one of those things that can be risky,” Darkko admitted. “What if no one voted?” Fortunately, the fans spoke up, casting thousands of votes for either Lauren Phoenix or Katja Kassin, who were in a dead heat at press time.
Hustler has managed to reinvent the Barely Legal line with a spin-off from director Van Styles called Barely Legal Corrupted, up to its second volume at press time. “My vision is to show fans that Hustler can compete in the gonzo market on the same level that the other studios are doing,” Styles states. Larry Flynt welcomes the new approach. “Barely Legal has probably been the single most successful line in video history,” says the boss. “We sell up to 20,000 and 30,000 units a month, which is really unheard of for just a regular video, and it’s still strong. But we have some new ideas, and people wanted to put a rougher edge to it, and we’re trying that.” Styles reveals his style: “I like to show off the girl’s personality as well as her looks. I talk back and forth with her and try to be playful. I try to bring out who she really is.”
Like mainstream Hollywood, the adult world also sometimes relies on remakes; usually with much better results. Such is the case with director Paul Thomas’ much-anticipated Devil in Miss Jones, starring Jenna Jameson, Savanna Samson and original cast member from the 1972 production, Georgina Spelvin. “It’s very, very different from the original version,” offers Thomas. “It was fun to shoot, and it’s good; it’s real good. The challenge now is to edit it together. There’s so much sex in it. How much do you want to stop the forward motion of the film? We have an orgy scene which alone could be a three hour movie.” Thank God for bonus features.
Euro sphincter-savant Christoph Clark seems reinvigorated with this superb new line, which debuted in the latter part of last year and which out-fetishes his long-running Euro Hardball series.
