“This is going to be an incredible show,” says director James Avalon about James Avalon’s Darkside, the first release from Red Light District Films. With a big budget and shooting on Super 16 film, there’s no reason to doubt him.
On the third of four days he’s shooting at a studio in downtown Los Angeles that doubles as a swingers club. An experienced, economical director, he knows how to get two things going at once.
In the club, he’s setting up for a seven-person orgy he’ll shoot later. He seems laid-back and casual, but he’s all efficiency. At the other end of the long building, another sex scene is already in progress, under the supervision of Red Light regular Vince Vouyer.
It’s set in a mock science lab presided over by white-coated Bill Margold in the non-sex role of a batty researcher. He hovers in the background, taking notes as three women and two men go at it.
Kelly Wells sits on the dick of a character called The Nerd. An extra who was drafted into stud service, he’s doing well for a non-pro. Petite redhead Sunny Lane masturbates as blonde Holly Wellin gets fucked by Alex Rox, a scruffy Hungarian.
They’ve taken a break, but Alex keeps fucking Holly, for fun.
Vouyer warns him about squandering his capital. “I don’t want you bombin’ on me later on. We got too much film to do here. Kick him out,” he orders Holly.
Rox does have problems later — “You got tired, I told ya,” Vince says — but he recovers and is able to deliver enough for a three-girl cum swap.
The drill is that Avalon directs the dialogue, softcore and the film’s overall look and flow. Vouyer says he’s there to make sure the sex is of “Red Light quality — cumshots, A2Ms, lots of messiness.”
“We chanced on a new niche,” Avalon says. “Gonzo-style sex scenes worked into a feature.”
With an Avalon sensibility and the spunk of a Red Light fuckfest, the movie already sounds like a winner.
James Avalon’s Darkside is scheduled for an August release.
