If you've heard of burning up the bed with passion, consider this: A young Canadian couple looking for a night of hot Valentine's Day romance got the bed hot the hard way: the mattress burned while they were having drinks in a hotel bar, bringing in the firefighters.
The couple had lit candles and put wine on ice the previous Saturday, Reuters says, before going to the Holiday Inn Plaza Hotel bar for drinks. While the couple was at the bar, the fire alarms rang off and firefighters were called in - to their room. Hotel general manager Michael Dalpe thinks one of the candles may have fallen to the bed, setting the mattress afire.
The alarm led to orders that all hotel guests leave their rooms and gather in a ballroom downstairs, Reuters says. Two hotel workers were treated for smoke inhalation.
The mattress fire was put out quickly. But what of the unidentified lovers? ``This," says Dalpe, "is the hot couple of Hull.''
