PC Week is saying Microsoft will "take one on the chin," PR-wise, and hold off releasing Windows2000 until February 2000, instead of its previously-promised 1999 release.
The magazine says several sources have revealed Microsoft will take the deliberate rather than the rush launch and try to get the product right rather than saving face.
The most likely launching pad, PC Week says, seems to be a trade show in San Francisco in February.
But Microsoft officials still say they plan a December 1999 release for Windows2000, though users would not have the software in hand for six to eight weeks. Nevertheless, PC Week says, company officials "are resigned" to the fact that it isn't necessarily a bright idea to ship new software at year's end given Y2K issues real or imagined.
The magazine says quality issues and development delays also have a hand in the potential February delay.
