2257 Changes Now Official

Attorney General John Ashcroft's proposal to amend the record-keeping and inspection requirements of the federal regulation known as 2257 – which covers the depiction of sexually-explicit activity – is now an official proposal.

This proposal comes in the wake of revelations, reported last week by AVNOnline.com, the government had been lax when it came to such 2257 inspections. "As a practical matter," wrote attorney Clyde DeWitt, "there had been none." But inspections will be coming, he strongly implied, bringing with him a 26-page proposal to address what it describes as the "need for more specific and clear regulations detailing the records and inspection process required by § 2257."

The suggested modifications were published June 25 in the Federal Register, with an August 24 deadline for written comments about the changes to be received by the Justice Department Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section.
